What you should know

How do I get there?

If you’re going from Bandaranaike International Airport you can go directly to the taxi desk before you exit the airport and arrange the transfer quite easily. Make sure you ask to go via the Expressway. It costs around $75 to get to Galle.

Otherwise, travel like a local; start your journey from Maradana Station. It’s a couple of kilometres further than Colombo Fort station but it’s where the train from Colombo to Galle starts. A second class train ticket costs Rs180. The journey is scenic and mostly along the coast with open sea views.

Do I need to go with a guide?

If you are just starting your surfing experience, you will definitely want to hire an instructor at least for the initial few lessons. If you are serious about mastering the waves, you should take a week-long stay where multiple hours of instruction each day will give you a good base for your surfing journey.

Do I need to train up?

Surfing can be a pretty intense sport. Although the waves of Dewata/Unawatuna are ideal for beginners, you should still know how to swim and be comfortable with vigorous exercise for a few hours at a time.

What's the best time to go?
The best months to visit are January, February, March, April, November, December
We recommend the above period because you would have:
  • Good weather
  • More activities available
