Helpful Questions from Other Travellers

Q
How do I get there?
A
Yushan is located at the Central Mountain Range of Taiwan. There are many different trailheads and ways to get to Yushan, the most common way would be taking public transport to Chiayi. Chiayi is easily reachable by direct train from Taipei, Kaohsiung or any big cities on the west coast. Then, take the Alishan Train or County Bus to Alishan and hire a car to Tataka Visitor Centre. It will take approximately 2.5 hours car ride to reach Tataka Visitor Centre, which is the starting point of your summit hike. If you choose to go with a guide, most of them would include transportation from Taipei.
Q
Do I need to go with a guide?
A
A guide is not necessary if you are a seasoned hiker and you have climbed at least one mountain that is above the sea level of 3000m. However, it could be a lengthy process to secure a hike permit and accommodation in the park. Hiring one of the local guides here would make your hike preparation a stress-free one.
Q
Do I need to train up?
A
You need to be in good fitness condition in order to enjoy the hike. It wouldn't be strenuous for you if you are active or you have hiked a 3000m mountain before. Beginning of the trail is relatively gentle whereas the last 500m is relatively steep, some scrambling is required.
Q
What's the best time to go?
A
The best months to visit are May, June, October, November, December
We recommend the above period because you would have:
  • Good weather
  • Beautiful late spring sights in May or June. The mountain will be blooming with beautiful wild flowers. Whereas in October to December, you will see snow capped mountain tops.
