Helpful Questions from Other Travellers

Q
How do I get there?
A
Kenting is accessible via the High Speed Rail which connects Taipei with Zuoying, Kaohsiung. The total travel time from Taipei to Zuoying (Kaohsiung) via HSR is approximately 90 min. After arrival in Zuoying, exit the station and head outside where there is a bus stop. You can buy your bus ticket at the booth near Exit #2. Take the express shuttle bus to Kenting (墾丁). This is the fastest and most convenient way to get to Kenting.
Q
Do I need to go with a guide?
A
If you are a seasoned surfer, you can most likely handle this on your own. However, if you are just starting out or even if you are a strong intermediate surfer, it is highly advisable to go with a guide. A local surfer guide will introduce you to the beach and reef breaks, show you where to find the best barrel waves and can also teach you some new tricks. If you need a board, the guide will also help you pick one out.
Q
Do I need to train up?
A
You'll need to be in good physical shape in order to paddle out to the surf break and to be able to stay out in the water for several hours at the time, while being pummelled by the waves. You should also be a confident and strong swimmer.
Q
What's the best time to go?
A
The best months to visit are June, July, August
We recommend the above period because you would have:
  • Good weather
  • Better waves during summer months.
Q
Any tips for what to do in the area?
A
Visit the 2km long Kenting Night Market. You'll find a long stretch of yummy local food stalls, clothing shops and carnival-style games. You can also go sightseeing on an e-bike, they are available for rental in the city centre. Explore on your own pace along the scenic coastline drive and catch a sunset too!
