What you should know
There are eight different routes leading to the Knuckles Mountain Range. Most travellers arrive at the site from Colombo or Kandy. The journey from Colombo will take about a five to six hours drive, depending on the route that you take, while a drive from Kandy lasts a duration of about three hours. You can get the bus from Kandy bus station to Mahiyangana and get off at Hunasgiriya. From there you can get a tuk-tuk to the Knuckles Range Conservation Centre.
Like most mountain ranges, the weather at the Knuckles Range is unpredictable so it’s always recommended you’re well prepared, have the necessary experience and hike with a local guide.
The day treks are beginner-friendly. So just make sure you are comfortable going through rugged mountains, lush grasslands, fresh streams and cascading waterfalls. Casual hikers can spend a day taking in the natural beauty of the area, while more serious hikers could spend a few days hiking and camping at the entire range with a guide.
The best months to visit are March, April, May, June, July, August, September
We recommend the above period because you would have:
- Better visibility
- Good weather
- Dry season
Although hiking is the biggest lure in Knuckles, the conservation site has plenty of other noteworthy attractions to visit. Meemure is a lazy rural village deep inside the forests. With beautiful streams and waterfalls, it offers mesmerising views and photograph-worthy vistas. It is a little-known attraction, mingle with the villagers, who are more than happy to converse and discover Sri Lanka’s much-famed hospitality.
