Mt Bromo Trek

Mt Bromo is an active volcano where you can trek to the crater rim for extraterrestrial views at sunrise, or ride up on horseback. It’s an easy trek comprised mainly of stairs so it’s great for beginners. For the adventurous, combine a Bromo trek with a blue flame trek at Ijen, or a visit to Tumpak Sewu waterfall.

Helpful Questions from Other Travellers

Q
How do I get there?
A
To reach Mount Bromo, you can fly to Juanda international airport in Surabaya. There are direct flights to Surabaya from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hongkong, Jakarta and Bali. From there, continue your journey to Mt Bromo by booking with a travel agent, or driving the Surabaya-Pasuruan-Wonokitri-Mt Bromo route.
Q
Do I need to go with a guide?
A
Climbing Mt. Bromo or hiking up to the top of the sunrise viewing point is not difficult and the route is not confusing so a guide is not required. But we do highly recommend hiring a guide or at least a good driver as they will help you to arrange the transportation from Surabaya, Malanga or Probolingo. They can also help to coordinate accommodation or stops along the way to see other points of interest.
Q
Do I need to train up?
A
This activity is an easy hike, yet you need to be fit to walk for an hour in a cool weather.
Q
What's the best time to go?
A
The best months to visit are June, July, August
We recommend the above period because you would have good weather.
Q
Is there anything else I should know?
A
Bring a thick jacket for sunrise trekking and avoid Indonesian national holiday when more domestic travellers will be headed to this area.
