What you should know
There are 2 airports in Sumba — one in East Sumba and the other in Southwest Sumba. The airport is East Sumba is Umbu Mehang Kunda. It was previously known as Mau Hau and is located in the town of Waingapu. The airport in Southwest Sumba is called Tambolaka. There is a direct domestic flight from Bali to these airports.
Yes, as Sumba is still new to tourism, you need to go with a guide who understands the area well as some parts of the island has no signal at all and the locals don't speak English.

Temperatures are high throughout the year, especially from October to May. The hottest days of the year, with highs about 35/36 °C (95/97 °F), are often recorded in October and November, before the rainy season. Temperatures are slightly lower from June to August.
If you enjoy a green savannah, you may want to visit during wet season (December to February). If you would prefer a brown savannah, we recommend going in August.
