Why go

Kite travellers from around the globe come to Kalpitiya Lagoon, long regarded as the top spot in Sri Lanka for kitesurfing. Beginners love the flat, shallow water which shelters from strong waves, and pros love the reliable winds at a near-constant stream of 25+ knots! Epic kitesurfing freestyle competitions are also regularly held here.

What to do or see here

Best Time to Go
  • Summertime from May to early October delivers strong south-west winds every day ranging from 18 to 30 knots. During this season the wind blows almost 24h a day.
  • Winter season from mid-December to end of February, with lighter north-west winds from 12 to 20+ knots. This is the best time for beginners!
Who is it for?

All level kitesurfers, though if you're a beginner do try to go from December to February.
