Kandy Tea Estate

Spend a day in the hills of Kandy exploring the lush green tea estates and experiencing the tea industry of Sri Lanka, an industry that has shaped the lives of generations of Sri Lankans since 1867. This experience takes you to the mystical green tea terraces in the backyard of the Old Frankland Tea Estate, where you can be immersed in the old Sri Lankan tradition of picking and brewing tea leaves. You can also opt to head to a nearby factory where you can learn about the intricacies of tea processing.

The experience takes place at the Old Frankland Tea Estate, which is approximately an hour's drive from Kandy. You'll be picked up from a location of your choice at Kandy town centre by the friendly staff at the Frankland Tea Estate.

To get to Kandy, you can catch the train or drive from Colombo. The journey from Colombo to Kandy will take you approximately 3.5 hours (whether by train or car).

Not at all. The walk around the estate is at a very easy pace.

There is no bad time to go as this experience isn't weather dependent, and doesn't require you to be outdoors for a protracted period of time. However, if you are flexible with your dates, you may like to avoid rainy season (May to September), which may present wetter conditions.

You will need a day and a night to experience the tea plantation, factory and enjoy a restful stay at the estate.

Day 1: Arrive at Old Frankland Tea Estate in the afternoon, and relax for the rest of the day in the beautiful surroundings overlooking the tea terraces.

Day 2:
8:00am: Tour of tea estate
10:00am: Check out

Optional

The tea plantation is quite isolated, so there is not very much to do in the immediate surrounding area. However there is plenty to do in Kandy. In Kandy, you can visit the Bhudda Tooth Temple, the Kandy Botanic Gardens or walk around the lake.
