5 Hidden Gems in Labuan Bajo

1. Warung Belek 

Why should travellers go

If you are into smoked pork, we would highly recommend this local store called Warung Belek. One would be fully immersed by the local village atmosphere while enjoying the most tender smoked pork ever. 

How to get there

Address:  Labuan Bajo, Komodo, West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia

You will have to take a 10 to 15 minutes taxi or an Ojek ride to get here as this store is located off the town and beside a roadside. 

2. Visit the Melo Village

Why should travellers go

This is something that many will not find. Travellers will be greeted with a Manggaral arts and culture performances such as the “Tetek Alu” dance which is a traditional bamboo pole jumping game. We would advise for you to travel with a guide or a local who will be your translator as most of the locals here do not speak English. 

How to get there

You will have to take a boat to get here. There are many one day speedboats for you to hire. If you are travelling on a specific boat operator, you might want to check to see if they are able to make a pit stop to this village. 

How long do you need 

We recommend at least saving half a day to one full day for this so that you are able to have a chat with the locals to learn more about their culture. To truly get an idea of Manggarian daily life with a short trek around the village and see where they cultivate vanilla, coffee, candlenut and cacao. 

3. Atlas Pearl Farm 

Why should travellers go

If you are interested to learn more about where pearls come from - this is for you! This pearl farm is located at Pulau Pungu in Labuan Bajo. This place allows you to swim and to search for your own pearls in the ocean. 

How to get there

The only way to get here is by boat. You can either ask your boat captain whether it is possible to make a pit stop at this place or to hire a speedboat for a day. 

How long do you need 

This activity might take about half a day depending on how quick you find your pearls and how long you intend to stay there if you have any questions to ask the staff. 

4. Cunca Rami Waterfall

Why should travellers go

Hidden within the forest; talk about a hidden gem! This place is not known to many because you’ll have to take a 15 to 20 minutes walk through the forest to see this beauty.

There are no signages that will guide you through, so it is recommended that you go with a guide or a local to get you there.

5. Visit the fish market

Why should travellers go

You’ll get to see a wide array of fish selections freshly caught by the fishermen. You can also have a chat with them on their craft and how long they have been a fisherman for. 

How to get there

If you stay in the town area, it will only be a 10 minutes walk from your hotel. Alternatively, you can also opt to hire an Ojek or a taxi to get you there. 

How long do you need 

The fish market is open from 7 am to 8 pm. The entire tour of the market will not take your more than 20 - 30 minutes. We highly recommend buying a fish or two to cook if your accommodation provides a kitchen and its necessities to cook the seafood found here is so fresh.
