We had a 5 hour safari tour for 5500 rupes including pickup and return from hotel. Our driver is Ashad, son of Ajith. We enjoyed every minute in Udawalawe National Park! So many varieties of animals to see and Ashad has a real hawk eye to see small birds and even still chameleons with the exact color as the tree twigs. No idea how he made it. He has a book collection of animals in Sri Lanka therefore it also helps us to learn about many animals that we don't know before.

Had a great afternoon Safari with our guide and driver Sandun. He arrived before the pick up time at the Shangri La Hambantota and proved to be an excellent guide when we reached the park spotting many birds and other animals that we’d have missed. He was in no hurry and gave us a memorable afternoon.

Had a great time at Udawalawe watching the elephants in the afternoon safari and at Yala find the leopards in the morning safari. Our guide Vishna had incredible enthusiasm and knowledge of the parks. He had passion for wildlife and his work which always lifted our energy when the heat burns you up. For those planning a visit I would recommend you find a good driver and you won’t need to pay extra for a guide. The morning safaris are best for those looking to avoid the heat. Yala is a much bigger park with a greater variety but Udawalawe has more elephants and you get closer to them.

We had an amazing time with Ajith safari jeep tours. We have preboked the Udawalawe tours with them. The driver is excellent and professional. Very experienced and knowledgeable about the wildlife. The jeeps were comfortable and they are using toyota hilux's and land cruisers.

We were picked up early from Hambantota for the full day Yala tour, returning about 6:30pm. Our driver was Sachika, who was very good both on the roads and on the safari. He also worked well on the phone with friends and colleagues to try and locate other animals. Our guide was Gayan, who we picked up at the entrance to the park. He had very good vision, picking up small lizards, small birds as well as the larger animals. It took all day, but we found a leopard drinking right near the end, which was amazing. Together they were able to take video through the binoculars for an extra close-up look. We saw a lot of elephants, deer, buffalo, mongoose as well as some monkeys and crocodiles. There were reports of a bear, but we did not see it. The food was plenty and very good. We also earlier booked the Udawalawe half day for the next day just in case Yala did not work out. In hindsight, it was not really needed after our great day at Yala. Sackika took us again but a different guide this time. It was good, but other than dozens of elephants in a more open setting, our great day at Yala made it difficult to beat. Nevertheless, there were lots of baby elephants (only months old). Make sure to wear warm clothing for early morning pick-up - the back of the Hilux is open at the sides and front, so more than 1 hour on the main roads gets very cold.

Can you arrange transportation to/from Udawalawe National Park?

Yes sure! If you're coming from any other parts of Sri Lanka (e.g. Colombo) to Udawalawe National Park for your safari, or you need to head from Udawalawe National Park to any other parts of Sri Lanka after your safari, we can provide a private car transfer. This will cost US $60 per 4-person car, per one-way transfer. Please do indicate in your booking form if you require this transfer.

What safari duration should I go for?

Udawalawe is a small national park so if you're lucky to spot all the wildlife quickly, you only need a three-four hour safari (which is the most popular option). However, you might see different wildlife and different behaviour in the early morning compared with late afternoon, so if you're a keen photographer or a huge wildlife lover, you may want to do a full-day safari to maximise your chances of seeing the wildlife!
