The route lies completely within the boundaries of the Kanchenjunga national park. The forest you will experience here is denser and greener than what you will get to see on most other routes. There are opportunities to see very different species of flora and fauna. The region is known for the Himalayan Black Bear, the Blue Sheep, Thar, Snow Leopard, Foxes, Red Panda, and several bird species, including a few critically endangered ones like the Blood Pheasant. It has a very high density of rhododendrons where pink, white, red and yellow rhododendrons abound in the region. The route offers spectacular views of several high peaks in the area including Mt Pandim, Mt Tenzingkhang, Mt Kanchenjunga, Mt Kokthang, Kabru Massif and many more. This is one of the more challenging but exciting and fulfilling trails in the country.

Itinerary

Itinerary

This is a sample itinerary and may be weather-dependent. Start/end times may depend on transport chosen.
Day 1: NJP/Bagdogra - Yuksom

A 6-7 hours ride in a jeep through the hills

Accommodation: Yuksam Residences -

  • Jeep Ride (6-7 hours)
  • Upon arrival at Yuksom, prepare for the trek that starts the next day.
  • If time permits, one could see around Yuksom (e.g. the Dubdi Monastery and the Coronation Throne)
Day 2: Yuksom (1750m) - Sachen (2250m)

Trek about 8 km today which will take roughly 4 hours.

  • This is a fairly easy walk and most trekkers take about 4-5 hours to reach Sachen. The gradual incline helps non-experienced trekkers get used to the demands of the trail.
Day 3: Sachen (2250m) - Tshoka (2950m)

Trek about 8 km today for 4 hours.

  • The walk begins in an easy fashion from Sachen and takes about 1 hour to the bridge over Prek Chu.
  • Followed by a 5 km straight ascent for after 1.5 hours.
  • Rest briefly at Bakhim (Bamboo Hut) and enjoy the views of the valley below.
  • Rhododendron trees will be in constant companion as you trek for another 1.5 hours to Tshoka.
Day 4: Tshoka (2950m) - Dzongri (3950m)

Trek about 10 km today for 5-6 hours.

  • Start at about 08:00 hrs.
  • Rest briefly at Phedang (3679m) for lunch/rations that you have packed.
  • Hike 1 hour to Deorali top (4100+m), the highest point today.
  • The trail eases out and descends lightly to Dzongri.
  • NOTE: It is a steep climb and you will gain altitude fast, but it is important to not rush up the slope. Take it easy upon reaching Dzongri to acclimatize. Be sure to let the guide knows if you experience headache/health difficulty. There is no water source on this trail, and trekkers must fill up at Tshoka and ration their water wisely.
Day 5: Acclimatization to Dzongri

Take a rest and indulge in the breathtaking scenery of Dzongri.

  • You may choose to wake up early and walk up to Dzongri top to get a full panoramic view of the many snow-capped mountains at sunrise. One can see at least 10 peaks here from left to right, including Kokthang, Rathong, Frey’s Peak, Black Kabur, Kabru Dome, Kabru North and South, Kanchenjunga, Pandim, Tenzingkhang, Japnoo, Narsing and a few others.
Day 6: Dzongri (3970m) - Thansing (3800m)

Trek for about 10 km today and surrender to nature's splendour.

  • Ascend a little before the steep descent to Kokchurang campsite. The descend is challenging for almost everyone and takes about an hour.
  • Rest briefly at Kokchurang campsite
  • Proceed to Thansing and trek through the beautiful forest
  • Be welcomed by the outstanding views of Mt. Pandim and/or join the locals playing cricket, football or volleyball at the wide-open field.
Day 7: Thansing (3800m) - Lamuney (3950m)

A simple trek of about 3.5km for 1.5 hours

  • The trek today is a very gradual gain.
  • Start late at about 10:00 hrs and reach Lamuney by 11:30 hrs.
  • Relax at camp.
Day 8: Lamuney (3950m) - View Point 1 (4600m) - Kokchurang (3600m)

Trek for about 15km today

  • Start at 02:30 hrs where the temperature may still be sub-zero.
  • Cross the Samiti Lake in the dark
  • Reach the viewpoint before sunrise
  • Catch the beautiful first light as peaks light up in descending order of altitude with Kanchenjunga first, Kabru North and the subsequent lower peaks.
  • Descend to Samiti Lake and reach about 08:00 hrs
  • Trek back to camp at Lamuney and have an early lunch
  • Move down to Kokchurang campsite by the river for the night.
  • NOTE: Carry a pair of binoculars and get a chance to spot a rare snow leopard or a flock of blue sheep.
Day 9: Kokchurang (3600m) - Tshoka (2950m)

Trek about 15km today for 6-7 hours

  • Walkthrough the very dense forest from Kokchurang to Phedang which takes about 4-5 hours.
  • From Phedang, turn left and down towards Tshoka, a continuous descent which takes about 2 hours.
Day 10: Tshoka (2950m) - Yuksom (1750m)

Today is the last day of trek. Trek 16km which will take about 8-9 hours.

Accommodation: Yuksam Residences -

  • Take the same route as you took to go up.
  • Descend all the way to the suspension bridge over Prek Chu below Bakhim which will take between 1.5-2.5 hours.
  • Continue along gentle ups and downs while constantly losing altitude. This will take between 5-7 hours.
Day 11: Yuksom - NJP/Bagdogra

Leave for your onward travels

  • It is advisable to start the day early since it is a long drive.
  • The drive should ideally not take more than 7-8 hours.
  • Lunch can be enjoyed at Jorthang or Malli which serves great local foods.
