We had an excursion of 2 days 1 night called Free Water Solo (or maybe Deep Water Solo), the first half day we did free solo climbing on a rock above the water in small group of 5 with 2 great staff people, amazing experience. We lunched on a floating house had a great meal, chilled a bit and went on our own doing kayaking and stayed sleeping on the floating house (eating a freshly fished fish ). The next day went on a boat trip in the Halong bay, did some kayak, jumping from a boat and it was time to come back to Cat Ba
We had a wonderful experience with Cat Ba climbing. The Deep water solo trips were unforgettable. They also gave us information and passes to the local crags and have easy and affordable gear rentals. We did a day trip to Mit Beach which was a dream come true. The guides are extremely knowledgeable and safety is a priority. They were also very helpful with finding great local food spots and other information about the island. We had a more authentic feeling experience with CBC than other tour companies in the area. We will definitely be back!
We booked the Ha Long Bay day tour as they were offering it at a cheaper price than other places. It was a great day and we had a lot of fun so would definitely recommend. It’s done through a local guide and went the exact same places as all the other tours.
However we firstly had an issue with our transfer, not sure if it was a communication issue, but we weren’t picked up from our hostel like they said, we waited 35 minutes but no one came. Our hostel rang them and they immediately sent a taxi through to us which was a good save and we made it just in time!
The other issue we had was the tour boat had ‘run out’ of bottles of water (but had plenty of cans of beer and pop). Luckily other guests were kind enough to share!
we are a family with young children and we climb indoors mostly. we visited in December 2018. We stayed in Cat Ba town(3 nights) near the office to catch the action and it was a great idea for it was off season in Cat Ba we had no issue with booking the tours. But summer months could be different and you may benefit from booking the entire thing(lodging and all) from Hanoi. Cat Ba Climbing was our first outdoor climbing experience and it was amazing. This company compared to the other company(who is bigger a few steps from each other) climbs for longer and is dedicated to climbing experience. the staff is passionate about climbing and my young children were encouraged and cherished through the experience. we did hidden valley half day climbing, deep water solo half day, and lan ha bay/ha long bay boat tour. the first two were offered by the catba climbing company staff and I believe the third one was consolidated with another agency. but it was a great tour and price was as cheap as it gets. we are so touched by their great care and dedication. we would love to come back and climb some more on Cat Ba island and would not hesitate to contact this company again. ps. we are intermediate level climbers. the area does offer great options for beginner/intermediate level climbers. if you are advanced you may enjoy private tour.
We booked a half day of deep water soloing, kayaking in Halong Bay, a night on the floating fish farm, half a day of roped climbing, and half a day of trekking through Cat Ba Climbing, which is a locally owned company owned by Mr. Zoom. We had looked into the competitor, Asia Outdoors, but Cat Ba Climbing seemed better able to cater to our particular needs and we liked using a locally-run business. My daughter and I are both experienced rock climbers with my daughter interested in harder climbs, including leading sport climbs, and Mr. Zoom was able to accommodate us. Mr. Zoom did a thorough safety check before sport climbing, and the gear all seemed solid. (We recommend bringing your own climbing shoes if you are picky b/c his selection was a bit limited. We did use his climbing shoes for DWS.) We had a lot of fun on our stay on the floating fish farm, although the family who runs it spoke no English. Their 7 year old daughter, Kim Ahn, was so much fun to hang out with though, and she actually went on the boat with us to DWS and kayak. Mr. Zoom had a couple nephews along to assist with belaying, etc. during the climbing portion of the trip. There were definitely climbs suitable for all levels both on DWS and the roped climbing. The kayaking in Halong Bay was also very fun. It was a bit hot and humid in July so the rock wasn't in ideal conditions, but we still had a blast. Mr. Zoom was also able to accommodate us when we were really pretty tired on our last afternoon when we were supposed to do a trek. Instead, he got two motorbike drivers to take us all around the island (my daughter was very keen to get on a motorbike!), and we went to Hospital Cave. All in all we had a great experience with Cat Ba Climbing on all of our activities with them.
