Signed up for the Full Day Package on their online webpage about a week before the tour and received confirmation about a day later. Was informed that the pick-up at my hotel at 530am in the morning and was instructed to get a packed breakfast the day before. On the day of the tour, we were waiting at our hotel at the instructed time but they were not there. We had to call them and was only picked-up at 610am. Was very disappoint about the late pick-up and the lack of communication. Alba Cruise docks at one of the hotel and not at the harbour. On that day of we had the smaller speed boat and toured with another group of 5 people. Was informed about the itinerary of the day which was Padar island, Pink beach, Komodo Island, Kanawa Island and finally Kelor Island. The highlight of the trip was really Padar Island, and Komodo Island. For those who love snorkeling, pink beach was good too. The other two destinations wasn’t much of a highlight. Kanawa Island corals wasn’t very good and the waves kept pushing us back to shore. As for Kelor Island, everyone on the boat was too tired for the final destination. The boat was clean but it felt slightly stuffy in the late morning. Also, I believe after reaching our first destination, one of the engine was down so we took slightly longer to reach our destination on the remaining journey. I could see the captain fiddling with the engine controls throughout the journey. The guides helped to take photos and gave a brief introduction to the places. Overall, the tour on Alba Cruise felt more like a transport company than a tour where staff brought you from one destination to the next. In addition, would have loved to be on a bigger boat.

We booked with Alba Cruises the night we arrived in Labuan Bajo and we're pleased to see that they could accommodate us for the following morning. We were promptly picked up at 5.30am in the morning and taken to the point where we boarded our boat. The boat wasn't what I expected as was rather small (they use two boats, one for under 12 people and another larger boat for anything up to 34ppl), but was comfortable enough and has a bathroom on board. 20mins into our journey we hear alarm bells ringing and they advised the second engine had stopped working. Long story short, after sitting on the boat for what would have been 3+ hours waiting for them to fix it, they decided to cancel the trip and to make it up to us, took us Kelor Island (on the one engine) for snorkeling. Luckily we were able to go again the next day (for no extra charge) and they also took us out to dinner to make up for the wasted day. The next day went smoothly although we weren't able to make it to Taka Makassar or Manta Point as the weather was not good. Lunch is provided and very tasty, they also provide endless water supply (bottled water) and snacks in between as it is a long day (5.30am to 4pm). Drivers pick you up and drop you home so really convenient. The guides speak good English and for young chaps, manage the day and the adversities the weather can bring. I would have rated them 4 if the first day engine troubles hadn't happened. The spots they take you too are gerogeous and the staff are really attentative. Prices are high but seems the going rate and you are out the full day with lunch, snacks and water. We booked through an agency and the cost was IDR 1.2m/pp plus entrance fees to Komodo - higher on a Sunday so can range from IDR 270k to 325k/pp.

Overall a nice experience. We did a full day tour. Guide and crew were great. Only suggestion is for when snorkeling at Manta Point: People got into the water but ended having to swim a ways away. A few slow swimmers or stragglers were exhausted and the boat moved ahead of with the faster swimmers, leaving behind the slow ones and those who had to stop to adjust their snorkels or fins. Would make sense for the boat to pull buoy for those who might need it or at lease move along with the people behind the group.

BEWARE - Not as advertised. It was supposed to be a small group but they put us on a much bigger boat ran by another company. The itinerary was more or less the same but our boat got beached and we missed the last two destinations. No refunds offered. They have a good website but please use another company!

How much are Komodo National Park fees?
Komodo National Park fees are complicated. They depend on: the islands visited (which is weather dependent), whether it's a weekday or a weekend, whether the guest is a foreigner or a local, and the number of people on the boat (as ranger fees are shared). This is why no two people will tell you the same number when asked about fees! The fees are also complicated by the fact that they're set by the national government and paid directly to Jakarta. So there is little visibility on changes from time to time. This is why we usually advise international guests to bring cash of between IDR 350K to IDR 460K per person per day for weekdays and between IDR 400K to IDR 520K per person per day for weekends. This is more than you need, but it avoids you ending up short of cash if the boat doesn't have too many people or the fees suddenly change!
Will I get the exact same boat in the pictures?
You'll get the same type and quality boat, but you may not get the exact same boat. There are 4 types of boat - Standard (i.e. basic), Speedboat, Deluxe and Luxury. Most of the boat operators in Komodo have a few boats that they rotate. Depending on the group size on the day, the boat operator may end up using a larger or smaller boat. The boat that they use will be of the same type and quality but may not be exactly the same boat. Also, there may be situations where the exact boat needs to be sent for servicing so the boat operator may use another boat in these cases as well.
Is the itinerary guaranteed?
The itinerary for Komodo National Park is very weather dependent, as the journey takes place out in open waters. Some days the currents are very strong, and it might not be safe to go to certain islands. We know this can be frustrating if you had your heart set on specific spots, but please be assured that the boat operators will do their very best to make sure you see the dragons and the highlights of the park - even if it's not identical to the itinerary here. A visit to Komodo is quite the adventure, so please do be prepared to embrace some level of uncertainty!
