Absolutely amazing afternoon close up with a herd of elephants, monkeys, more birds than I knew existed, crocodiles, water buffalo, jackals and lizards. Srimal was our guide, his knowledge of the park and the animals is excellent. He organised everything including transport to Bundala from our accommodation. He had his own jeep and skilled driver and Srimal sits in the back with you to spot animals. He is very considerate, engine off when animals are close. Brilliant day out!

Thanks to our guide Srimal we had a great bird safari trip! Srimal is without any doubt the the best and most charming guide around. If you consider visiting Bundala, be sure to contact him via Khsrimal@yahoo.com or 0094779599397!
I recently visited Bundala National Park on Safari with Srimal. He was very knowledgeable and friendly. We saw lots of crocodiles, monkeys, water buffalo, peacocks, turtles and many other species of birds. The park is also home to a herd of elephants but we were unable to find them that day.
I would highly recommend a safari with Srimal, he is an excellent guide! Contact him via email or whatsapp to book.
We went on a 3 hour tour and saw lots of birds: eagles, hawks, 3 types of kingfisher, loads of waders and wetland birds. We did see buffalo, monkeys and a couple of mongoose, but as stated in other reviews, don't come here if you want to see big game. It's fantastic for birds though which was great for us.
We did our tour with Srimal based on the reviews on this website and he really does know his birds. He was able to spot, name and describe what we saw from a distance without binoculars which was impressive, and from what we could tell he didn't go wrong. The driver he brought was also very good at spotting things. It worked well with both of them, one looking out each side, and Srimal in the back with us to help us spot things and answer our questions.

It's worth knowing that you can do a longer tour for less though. We paid 13500lkr outside of the main migration season and we were a bit disappointed that Srimal spent some of our tour answering messages on his phone or taking videos on his gopro. But then there was less to see, so it was a shame that he didn't have an out of season price.
When we got to Bundala we found out that you can get a tour for around 6000lkr and pick up a national park guide at the entrance for free (plus tip I guess). It seemed that most would stay out for 4 hours giving you more chance to see one of the elusive elephants. We stuck with Srimal because we knew his knowledge was good, but from other reviews here it seems the park guides are a good bet too.
We arrived in Bundala after an early and full morning searching for the elusive leopard in Yala. Consequently we were quite tried before our afternoon safari in Bundala. We are also not really bird people so despite the good reviews our expectations were low for the afternoon.
Srimal has a driver with him so he concentrates on spotting wildlife. Yes there are some lovely birds but he also managed to spot a Python, star tortoise and some carefully camouflaged crocs.
We were also lucky to see the Elephants.
There is also a nice cliff overlooking the rugged sealine. This and numerous pretty watering holes adds to ambience.
The park is relatively small but overall a very pleasant way to spend an afternoon.
