This is a 3D2N full-board option that includes 2 afternoon river safaris, jungle walk and a charming stay atop a 100m hill overlooking the Kinabatangan Forest Reserve. Kinabatangan River is one of the best places for wildlife safaris in Malaysia, and you'll get the chance to spot wildlife along the river such as proboscis monkeys, elephants and orangutans. The resort is accessible with 600 steps staircase but the views plus atmosphere will certainly make it worthwhile. If you are lucky you might see Orangutans swinging past the resort area! Guests have also raved about their yummy Belgian-Asian fusion cuisine and the chef is able to accommodate different dietary needs.

The Last Frontier is truly a nature lover's paradise. Find it amidst the Kinabatangan Forest Reserve. Situated atop a hill, The Last Frontier Boutique Resort is the only lodging of its kind in the area. It boasts unique views, of both the surrounding primary rainforest and the river below. Owners, Gert (Belgian) and Jason (Malaysian), are a highly passionate duo dedicated in doing all they can to conserve this slice of paradise. The only access to the resort is by ascending a 250m long staircase leading through the luscious forest and over calm streams. In building these steps they were able to preserve the undulating terrain of the forest, leaving the natural habitat of the rarest wildlife virtually undisturbed.

Let's get the steps out of the way first - you do need to be relatively fit but its not that bad. I have COPD and apart from having to rest a couple of times (to admire the view) it wouldn't put me off returning. We did a 3N4D package which was perfect as we never felt rushed. The package included 3 afternoon river trips and a couple of hilltop walks. We opted to forego one of the walks for an early morning river trip (well worth it) and we squeezed in a visit to the Gomantong Caves (about 30-minutes from the resort). We saw lots of wildlife (heard lots more) on the river trips but taking photos of Orangutangs from the boat proved quite difficult. The highlight for us was seeing the Pygmy Elephants on our last afternoon. Our guide Rodel was a star! I should also mention that the rooms were clean and spacious and food delicious and freshly prepared! As there are only 4 rooms, there is no menu to choose from (having informed them of your dietary requirements prior to arrival). Beer and wine is readily available and reasonably priced. All our transfers were arranged with Gert and everything went according to plan. Thank you Gert and team for a fantastic few days.

Three of us stayed here and it was great. The tour guide was amazing and found us an elephant. The Food is delicious. We saw an orangutan at the site with her baby. We were very happy that we stayed here instead of a large resort.

Probably not for everyone... the stairs are uneven and you may go up and down three or four times a day (to get onto the river to look for wildlife) BUT worth every step. You are immersed in the jungle. Rooms are simple but comfortable. And because the Resort is on a ridge, mosquitos etc were not a problem. Jason and the staff team were great. They bother to remember everyone's name and somehow manage to meet all dietary requirements (gluten free pancakes for example!) We booked direct - easy to get email responses and useful information to prepare.

We booked 3d2n package and wish we'd stay longer. The trip exceeded our expectations in every way. The place and the rooms are beautiful, well furnished and sealed off so no jungle creatures could come in. The food was excellent and the staff went extra length to cater for our every need (they considered all guests' dietary needs like vegan or no fish). Gert and his staff know every guest by name and you can really get personalized experience. The owners can also tell you many interesting facts about Borneo and the animals themselves. During the tours we saw elephants, crocodilles, proboscis monkeys, wild boars etc.etc. it was definitely the highlight of our vacation, we would choose this place again and we hope we can come back some day :) thank you!!!

First things first. The steps are really not that bad. I had a foot injury and I managed just fine. As there are only 4 rooms it really does feel boutique and Jason and his team make you feel like one of the family. He is so helpful and as for the food. Just wow! It was better than anywhere I ate in Borneo including the 5. Star hotels. If you like pancakes these are the best you will ever eat. Thank you Jason for a fabulous stay
