The River is the longest in Sabah (560km) and is known for its remarkable wildlife and fascinating habitat. Proboscis monkeys, Macaques, Silver Langurs, various species of hornbills, Kingfisher birds, Oriental Darters and snakes are commonly spotted along Kinabatangan River. The area is also known for the sighting of the endemic Borneo Pygmy Elephants (the smallest elephant in the world) and Orang Utan (The Wild Men of Borneo).

Day 2: Kinabatangan River
Kinabatangan River

Enjoy a morning and afternoon river cruise. Also go on a guided afternoon where you'll see more of the local village life, and a night jungle walk.

  • 0530hrs - Wake up to the sound of birds and get ready for the morning river cruise. Meet your guide at the jetty.
  • 0600hrs - Enjoy the morning breeze while you search for wildlife along river bank. Most of them have stayed there overnight and they will look for foods before moving into the forest, away from predators and hot sun. The wildlife is most active during early morning and in the evening. You then have bit of time in the middle of the day to catch up on a book, take a nap or sign-up for other activities.
  • 0730hrs - Back to lodge. Breakfast is served at Haji Awang restaurant.
  • 0900hrs - Meet your guide for a walk along Kinabatangan River. Be on time for the meet up as your guide will provide a briefing before the trek starts. Take a leisure walk along Kinabatangan River and see the different species of trees and plants along the trail. While some parts of the forested areas in Kinabatangan remained preserved, many parts of it have gone through trees re-planting project as part of forest restoration or being converted to plantation. You will be able to spot the traditional fish trap set-up by the local villagers, using bottles. The locals catch their fishes using a unique method: They collect 10 or so plastic water bottles and attach about a foot of fishing line to them. Along the line, are sub lines with a hook and a piece of fruit which they toss into the water and let them float downstream. If and when a fish takes the bait, it will drag the bottle down with it, but the buoyancy brings the bottle back to the top and the fish fights back until it is too tired to continue. The locals look for the bottles that are bobbing up and down in the water and simply go over with their boat and reel the fish in. On the way back to the Lodge, stop by at our composting area. As part of our ‘Go Green’ project, we have adapted this concept of composing organic waste such as foods and plants materials and growing our own organic vegetables to serve our guests.
  • 1200hrs- Lunch is at Haji Awang Cafe. Thereafter, you have a free and easy afternoon until the next river cruise.
  • [Meanwhile, you can opt to participate in our tree planting activity which is part of our efforts to support the forest restoration at Kinabatangan area or sign-up for batik silk painting featuring the wildlife of Kinabatangan and bring it home as a remembrance of your trip. Both optional activities are not within your standard package.]
  • 1600hrs- Join in another afternoon river cruise to sight more wildlife and birdlife. As we are in the nature, each river cruise offers different sightings. You may recognize some of the wildlife and birdlife from the wildlife presentation of Day One. Your nature guide will help you with the information of each sighting.
  • 1800hrs - Return to the Lodge, freshen up and have dinner.
  • 2000hrs - Take the opportunity to learn the steps of our local dance with our talented staff before night trek.
  • 2030hrs - Enjoy the night trekking to watch sleeping birds and nocturnal creatures of the jungle.

Such an amazing trip! A once in a lifetime experience. The only hiccup was on our checkout morning. We had an early checkout, and were told we would have breakfast before we left. We quickly ate breakfast at the restaurant, so that we wouldn’t be late for our 07:20 checkout. As I was leaving, they presented me with some vegetarian food, which I couldn’t accept as we were running. Then we got to checkout, and the staff had kindly prepared a breakfast package for us. In short, we had 3 breakfasts available to us. An improvement in the communication that occurred between staff at checkout, restaurant staff and us would have spared some food goo to waste. A tiny complaint. I would not hesitate to recommend this company to any who wished to go to the Kinabatangan River. Henry, our guide, was brilliant. He and our boat-operator made such a huge effort to find an elephant for us to watch. We really appreciated it.

Combined a 2 night 3 day package at Nature Lodge Kinabatangan with a 2 night stay at Nature Lodge Sepilok, booked through the tour company (Nasalis Larvatus) that owns them. We extended the 3rd day in Kinabatangan to add a visit to the Gomangtong Caves at dusk. Be warned: you are VERY close to nature staying in the jungle! Coming from city life, it’s a bit of a culture shock being so close to all the insects and wildlife and that in itself is quite the experience. We stayed in a “private chalet” (it’s a wooden shack on stilts...) and the room and shower room/toilet was very basic, but had good air conditioning and plenty of insect screens on all vents and windows. If you are not okay with very basic lodging, then this is not the place for you. All of the boat tours and guided walks were fantastic. Amero (sp?) was an extremely knowledgable local guide and had an amazing eye for spotting wildlife. Cairo (sp?) who took us to the caves was also excellent. The hotel rents out wellies which are vital if it’s been raining - the mud is up to a foot deep in places. Make sure you take leech socks with you as there are leeches everywhere you walk in the rainforest. We saw everything on our tours: orangutans, proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, multiple species of hornbills, crocodiles, silver leaf monkeys, a Storm’s stork, eagles... it was incredible. The staff were fantastic - super friendly and helpful. I had a horrible stomach virus during my stay and they took great care looking out for me and preparing fruit outside of meal times for me. They let us stay in one of the empty dorm rooms after check-out time on our last day while we waited for our transfer to Gomantong.

We had an amazing time on the Kinabatangan river, saw a herd of elephants, all sorts of monkeys, a nesting orangutan, crocs, hornbills, just amazing. Our boat guide was good too. But this lodge was not great...not very clean, charge extra for every little thing (like Wellington boots hire), overcharged for a rushed visit to Gomonting caves, kept us captive for an hour after pick up from our hotel in Sepilok at an overpriced restaurant much too early for lunch. Highly recommended staying on the Kinabatangan river, but don't recommend using Nasalis Larvatus tours.

We booked our stay here as part of a packaged deal with Nasalis Larvatus tours and I could not recommend this tour company enough. I had an amazing time at the nature lodge we had a chalet with privet bath room as I'm traveling with my mum and it was spacious and clean with a modern bathroom! The dorm rooms looked perfectly nice as well along with the communal bathroom. The food was excellent and catered for all dietary requirements. The river cruises are incredible the views and the wild life was just as I had imagined it! The night time walks were an experience in themselves! Unfortunately we didn't get to go on the day time trek as a heard of Pygmy elephants were very close to camp! We didn't get to see them but on the night time walk we did see foot prints and could definitely hear the elephants growling! We got to see all sorts of animals on our stay but unfortunately we didn't see any orangutans which to be honest was very upsetting as seeing these amazing creatures in the wild was basically the reason for my trip to Malaysian Borneo. However our amazing guide John spotted a mother and baby as we were leaving Gomantong caves the next day I would highly recommended staying at the nature lodge! All of the staff are friendly and make you feel very welcome!

Will I definitely see Elephants and Orangutans?

No, we're afraid not. Kinabatangan River is one of the best places to see wildlife in Malaysia, as the wildlife mainly live around the small stretch of river. However, sometimes they do wander off to nearby palm plantations to feed for some weeks and then wander back to Kinabatangan River again. With wild animals, nothing is guaranteed - which is a little part of the magic too!
