First time in Bali, but I was determined to get a ride in! An Aussie mate recommended Bali Rides - who offer a proper mountain biking experience, not just a bimble on the road.
The communication with Ramang was great (everyone uses Whatsapp in Bali...), and the website gave lots of info. I especially liked the system for indicating your skill and fitness level.
It was definitely the highlight of my trip,...and we did a lot!! I went as a solo rider,...I had my own driver, my own 'one-on-one' guide, a choice of a couple of bikes on the day (we'd already decided the model etc.), breakfast, morning tea and lunch,...and a FULL day out!
I am sure there are various options for the routes,...but we went up to Lake Batur. I was picked up at 0700 from my hotel, then we drove 2.5 hours to the start point, not far from Lake Batur (at the foot of the volcano Mt Batur). On the way, we stopped for a bit of breakfast at a genuine Balinese place - no tourists there!
After a bit of a warm-up to get used to the bike, we were into it! Lots of great downhill, with the odd climb,...nothing too extreme (although I am sure there are other routes too). We rode through national park, farm land, small villages, past paddy fields, temples, schools,...then we stopped at a small shop (again, no tourists) for morning tea and to rehydrate. As an added bonus, there was a small puppy to play with and the young family who owned the shop were lovely. And yes, Ramang's wife Nina makes a killer brownie!
Next came some serious single track through the forest and bamboo,...with more great descents of farm tracks too. We had to watch out for the odd scooter coming the other way, plus the odd family dog protecting its territory (hilarious, as the guide obviously passed the dog first and only woke it up, whereas I had to play dodgem with the dogs!).
Lunch was at a top spot overlooking some paddy fields - fantastic views. It was an Indonesian buffet, so it you had not had a chance to try all of the wonderful Indonesian dishes previously, this was a great opportunity to sample them all!
The last 10 km or so was mainly road, downhill, and very fast! Then it was over all too soon! All up, it was 40km for the day. We finished at about 1400,...and had roughly 1.5 hours to drive back to my hotel.
I thoroughly recommend Bali Rides, whether you are a novice or a hardened expert rider. The team really look after you, have great equipment, excellent local knowledge and are just lovely people (I had some great conversations in the car).
If you are thinking about doing it,...just book it! It will make your holiday that much more memorable!
My kids and I took the Mount Batur Volcano loop. We had never done the mountain bike before. However, Ramang was very good in motivating us and ensuring that we would have a lot of fun. And we did!
This experience was amazing, invaluable experience, we had an opportunity to explore a more lesser known parts of Bali and get closer with the villagers.
Bali Rides was very well in organizing everything. They ensured that all bikes fitted to our heights and safe for us. The lunch was home-made meal with delicious dessert.
We will definitely explore Bali more with Bali Rides!
I booked the Batur volcano tour ride for me and my 9 year old son via the Bali Rides website and was so glad I did!
The day was incredibly well organised, starting with our hotel pick up at Nusa Dua. We were then taken to have.a bike fitting and the Bali Rides team were awesome in making sure that my son had the right setup with a carbon dual suspension ride. The drive to Batur went quickly with the driver giving us a rundown of the interesting sights on the way.
The volcano loop itself was amazing, we got to learn the history of the various eruptions and get our photos taken in the lava fields. The single track through the villages was great fun, all the kids came out to say hello and our guide gave us a fantastic tour of village life and the different crops that were being grown.
The ride ended with a delicious lunch prepared for us at the end, including the tastiest homemade brownies. What a great way to finish, thanks so much to Ramang and the team for giving us such awesome memories of our Bali holiday!
We had a really good ride around Batur. We were riding on different ground and about 24km and 250m altitude. We went through local areas and saw a lot of happy local Balinese people. We ended at a hot spring thermal bath, very delicious.
We can recommend this tour and the good service from our guide and driver (soigneur).
Ramang & his team are awesome.
See parts of Bali many will never see, views from spots that most will never see...enjoy mountain bike trails that explore this island paradise like none other, and have massive amounts of fun!
Great bikes, setup, lunches, and transport to + from the rides.
If you want a real mountain biking experience, do yourself a favour with Bali Rides!!!
