A rare chance to step inside village life in rural Sabah.
This is a rare chance to experience everyday life in rural Sabah - not a staged tourist village, but time spent with the people who live it. In Kiulu Valley, you’ll spend the day with welcoming Dusun villagers, hearing their stories and learning traditions like rubber tapping, rice cake making, and bead crafting, before sharing a homemade village lunch together.Kiulu is a real farming community where families still grow their own food, tap rubber, cook traditional dishes and make crafts that are part of daily life. For the day, you’ll be welcomed in to experience these traditions alongside your hosts, and see a side of Sabah that most travellers never do.The pace is slow and personal, with plenty of time for conversation, laughter and curiosity. Midday, you’ll sit down together for a homemade village lunch prepared by your hosts using fresh local ingredients. If you enjoy meeting people, hearing their stories and understanding the rhythms of local life, this is one of the most genuine ways to experience Sabah’s countryside. What to ExpectHands-on rubber tapping in a local plantationVisit a local farmLearn to make traditional rice cakesCreate your own dalai bead accessoryEnjoy homemade Kiulu village lunch prepared by localsEnjoy warm interactions with local hosts and a glimpse into rural lifeGood to KnowThe experience involves light walking and some hands-on activities, suitable for most fitness levels.Activities may change slightly depending on weather and farm conditions.Lunch and snacks are created with fresh, local ingredients, supporting the local community. This experience is a gentle, immersive journey into Kiulu village, with activities suitable for all ages and interests. Meet your host

Mejin and June started Outreach Borneo back in 2018 with a simple idea—connecting travellers to the real Sabah through the eyes of its local communities. Based in Kiulu, they’ve built something truly special: a travel experience that feels more like being welcomed into someone’s home than joining a tour. Whether it's learning to cook over a bamboo fire, exploring jungle trails, or staying in village homestays, everything is thoughtfully done with the local people at heart. They work closely with families, guides, and farmers to make sure tourism brings real benefits to the area. What stands out most is how they’ve grown without losing sight of what matters—sharing culture, protecting nature, and making sure everyone involved gains something meaningful.
