Go deeper in Wae Rebo. Uncover its coffee heritage & community stories
The usual Wae Rebo trip can be pretty shallow. You'll just hike in, take pictures, stay the night and leave. This Wae Rebo trip with a local takes you deeper. Instead of only seeing the famous cone-shaped houses and not understanding the village, here you'll join the Wae Lu’u welcome ceremony, and get a much deeper look at local life through Wae Rebo’s coffee traditions and community stories. That coffee focus is what really sets this trip apart. You’ll walk through the village plantations, learn how coffee is grown in the Flores highlands, and join a tasting session. If you come during harvest season, usually May to August, you can also see the full-wash processing method in action. It adds a side of Wae Rebo that many visitors never get to experience. If your timing and hiking pace allow, you may also meet local women weavers and see another part of daily life here. The stay is simple and communal, with mattresses and blankets inside a traditional Mbaru Niang house, basic bathrooms, limited electricity, and no phone signal. That simplicity is part of the experience. It feels like spending time in a living, sacred village, not just stopping by for views. What to ExpectPrivate 2D1N trip with car transfers, local ojek transfer, local guide, and Wae Rebo entrance fees includedScenic drive from Labuan Bajo into the Flores highlands, followed by a 2.5–4 hour trek from Denge to Wae Rebo1 night in a traditional Mbaru Niang house with communal sleeping, simple mattresses, and blanketsWae Lu’u welcome ceremony on arrivalGuided walk through the coffee plantation and stories about local coffee-growing traditionsCoffee tasting sessionDuring harvest season, usually May to August, a chance to observe the full-wash coffee processPossible visit with local women weavers, depending on season and arrival timeMeals included: lunch and dinner on Day 1, breakfast and lunch on Day 2Good to KnowThis trip is best for travellers in good physical condition. Adel first visited Komodo in the early 2010s and immediately fell in love with its rich marine life. As a passionate diver, she saw an opportunity to build a life and business close to some of the world’s best dive spots. A few years later, she invited her sister Erli to join her, and together they’ve been growing the company with care and purpose. Each new boat they've built is named in memory of their late father, reflecting the deep family values that guide their work and their commitment to meaningful, authentic travel experiences.
