Experience the best of Borneo by exploring both Deramakot and Kinabatangan River
This 4D3N trip brings together Sabah’s two best wildlife spots in one adventure. You’ll start in Deramakot Forest Reserve — remote, off-grid rainforest where you go on 4WD safaris (including night drives) in search of rare species like clouded leopards, leopard cats and pygmy elephants. It’s quiet, wild, and far from the usual tourist trail. Then you head to the Kinabatangan River, where wildlife is easier to spot. Cruise along the river to look for orangutans, proboscis monkeys, crocodiles and rhinoceros hornbills, giving you a real shot at the Borneo Big 5.This is ideal for curious travellers who want to explore rarely visited areas, support local communities, and don’t mind getting a bit muddy for the chance to see some of Borneo’s rarest wildlife. If you’re over mass tourism and looking for something more offbeat and meaningful, this one’s for you. What to ExpectThrilling 4WD wildlife safaris (day and night) in the dense rainforest of Deramakot Forest ReserveSpot rare species like orangutans, leopard cats, flying squirrels, and possibly even clouded leopards or pygmy elephantsRiver safaris along the wildlife-rich Kinabatangan RiverGuided by passionate local wildlife experts who tailor experiences based on what you want to seeEnjoy hearty local meals and support community-owned lodges like Mr. Jamal’s B&BGood to KnowTourism tax of RM10.00 per room per night is payable in cash at the lodgesThis experience requires a minimum of 2 guests per bookingThe Deramakot Lodge is basic and power supply is limited to certain hours of the day—great chance to unplug! There’s minimal phone signal in Deramakot, so let loved ones know you’ll be offlineSafari timings may be adjusted depending on weather and wildlife activityRain, mud, and leeches are part of the fun—come with waterproof gear, patience, and a sense of adventureAmenities/facilitiesDeramakot Twin Room: Basic twin-share room with air-con and hot showers (no daily housekeeping)Kinabatangan Deluxe Room: Comfortable ensuite room with air-con—perfect to unwind after a full day of wildlife sightingsAll meals included—local flavours and hearty portions
