Off-the-Grid Sapa: Village Treks & a Rare Buffalo House Sleepover
This 3-day trek through the hidden valleys of Sapa is nothing like your typical tourist trail. Led by local Hmong guides, you'll hike at your own pace through remote villages, staying in traditional homes and sharing meals with your hosts. No crowded buses or rigid itineraries — just genuine cultural exchange, jaw-dropping scenery and warm-hearted people inviting you into their world. You'll spend one night in a peaceful homestay with panoramic rice terrace views, and another in a traditional Buffalo house way off the beaten track. This is best suited for curious travellers who prefer local gems over Instagram hotspots, value a slower and more meaningful kind of travel, and enjoy nature without needing luxury. What to ExpectTreks guided by locals on less crowded trailsStay two nights in authentic local homes: one at Zizi Homestay with stunning mountain views, and one in a remote Buffalo houseDine with local families and experience Hmong hospitality and home-cooked mealsExplore quiet, non-touristy villages and immerse in Hmong and Red Dao cultureEnd your trek with a scenic taxi ride back to Sapa or the homestayGood to KnowPick-up is in Sapa town All meals listed in the itinerary are included, but extra snacks and drinks are on youThis is a join-in experience with small groups, so it’s a great way to meet likeminded travellersBring cash for any entrance fees, snacks or souvenirs — card payments aren’t common in the villagesTerrain varies depending on your chosen path, but in general, expect dirt trails, steps, and gentle hills. Some parts may be slippery when wet, but nothing too extreme – even beginners have enjoyed this trek. Your guide will adapt the pace and route to suit your comfort level.

Meet your host

Zizi and Lilly started their homestay in 2016, creating a welcoming place for travellers while also supporting their local community. Zizi’s family once relied on rice farming, but tourism helped improve their lives, allowing them to upgrade from bamboo to wooden houses. Their journey hasn’t been easy—during COVID, they lost both their business and home to a fire. But through determination and the support of visitors, they rebuilt step by step. Today, their homestay is one of the most loved in Sapa. They hire local guides and run their place as a social enterprise, giving others in the community a chance at a better life.
