Less-crowded 2D1N Kinabatangan safari + support community conservation
Looking for a quieter way to experience Kinabatangan, especially during peak travel months? This 2D1N jungle camp stay takes you away from the busy lodge area to a lesser-visited stretch of the river, where boat traffic is lighter and the forest feels less disturbed. You’ll still see the same rich wildlife — just in a calmer, more intimate setting. The camp is built and run by the local community and sits inside a protected forest reserve. More than 20 years ago, villagers here chose conservation as a way to protect their land while creating steady livelihoods. Your guides are locals who have spent decades working in this forest and along the river. By staying here, you’re directly supporting their ongoing efforts to care for the rainforest and keep this part of Kinabatangan wild.Life at the camp is simple and focused on the forest. Everyone pitches in, and that community spirit is felt everywhere — even the general manager might be fixing a light bulb. It’s a humble, sincere place, offering a more local and less commercial alternative to typical wildlife lodges. What to ExpectQuiet river cruises with strong chances of wildlife sightingsGuided jungle walks by day and night with local village guidesLearn about long-running community-led conservation workSimple jungle living inside a protected forest reserveFewer boats, fewer peopleGood to KnowIncludes 1 night at a community-run jungle camp, dinner and breakfastWildlife sightings are not guaranteed! Meet your host

The Batu Puteh Community has been running things since 2003, when a few local groups came together to form KOPEL Bhd. It all started with the MESCOT Initiative and the Miso Walai Homestay Programme, and over time it grew into a proper cooperative. These days, more than 340 members from nearby villages are involved, each playing a part in the ecotourism and conservation work they do. What makes this group stand out is how they keep things local—offering jobs to people in the area and sharing earnings among members. It’s a community effort through and through, built on working together and looking after the place they call home.
