Review Body: Our two-night, three-day homestay with a Tibetan family was one of the most special and authentic experiences of our trip through Yunnan. We were welcomed so warmly into their home and had the opportunity to experience a little glimpse of their everyday life.
One of our favourite moments was seeing the family milk their yaks and then, the next morning, watching them turn the fresh milk into butter and other traditional dairy products. It was fascinating to see these traditions up close rather than simply hearing about them.
The food was absolutely delicious! Everything was homemade by the grandmother. We enjoyed the stay with her, her husband, together with the great-grandmother of the family. Every meal felt incredibly personal, and you could really taste the care that went into preparing it.
Our guide, Jack, was also wonderful. He was such a kind and friendly person and really became our bridge of communication with the family. Thanks to him, we were able to have meaningful conversations, ask questions, and learn so much about their lives and traditions. What we especially appreciated was how open and curious the family was, not only were they happy to share their culture with us, but they were genuinely interested in learning about our lives as well.
Our day trip to Napa Lake and the monastery was also an interesting experience. Jack and one of his guides shared so much interesting information about Tibetan culture and Buddhism, which gave us a much deeper understanding of the places we visited.
Overall, this was a truly memorable experience that we will carry with us for a long time. We are very grateful to the family for opening their home to us and to Jack for making the whole experience so special. If you are looking for an authentic, personal, and meaningful cultural experience, we can highly recommend this homestay! ❤️

Review Body: Looking back, the luckiest part of that trip to Shangri-La was probably meeting Lobsang Namgyal.
He's a local Tibetan, and his command of Tibetan, Chinese, and English is more than solid. He doesn't just know about Tibetan culture and Tibetan Buddhism — what's rare is how well he can convey it. The routes in this region are long, but because of him, the entire journey felt deeply enriching and genuinely enjoyable.
A full week before we even arrived, he had already reached out and arranged visits to several Tibetan herders' and families' homes — the kind of places you would never find on your own. The night before each visit, he would walk us through the plan, the timing, and what to keep in mind. The next day, he'd always show up with small gifts he'd prepared, and then simply lead us in, without any fuss or showmanship. It didn't feel like a service. It felt like he was sharing a small piece of his Shangri-La with us.
It's also worth mentioning that this man, who really does look a lot like Jackie Chan, is an excellent driver — calm and reassuring behind the wheel. We ran into trouble. And bad weather too. Lobsang never panicked, never grew impatient. He just stayed steady and handled things, one by one. That quiet, gentle steadiness reminded us that people who have something to believe in carry a quiet strength with them.
On the last day of the Great Shangri-La Loop, I remember thinking: if I ever come back, I'd still want him to be the one guiding me.

Review Body: We had a wonderful day hike with Jack. We can highly recommend him as a knowledgeable, reliable and friendly guide. He has responded great to our wishes in terms of daily planning. It was especially nice that Jack spoke fluent English and that you could exchange ideas about the country and people so well.

Rare access to Tibetan life that you wouldn't get by sightseeing on your own
If you only have one day in Shangri-La and want to understand Tibetan culture rather than just see the sights, this is it. Instead of walking around Songzanlin Monastery, taking a few photos and leaving, you’ll explore it with a local Tibetan guide, sit down privately with a lama and have lunch in a Tibetan family home.Your guide speaks Tibetan, Chinese and English, so you can actually ask questions and understand the beliefs, traditions and everyday life behind what you’re seeing. At Songzanlin, Yunnan’s largest Tibetan monastery, you’ll have a rare conversation with a lama about Buddhist practice, monastic life and his perspective on living well. Afterwards, you’ll be welcomed into a local Tibetan home for a traditional family lunch — another side of Shangri-La that most visitors don’t get to experience. In the afternoon, choose another side of local life. Try Nixi black pottery, a centuries-old unglazed craft unique to this part of Yunnan, and shape your own piece by hand. Or visit a local craft brewery using highland spring water and plateau-grown ingredients. It’s a full day, but if you want to leave Shangri-La understanding a little more about the people and culture behind the beautiful scenery, this is the day we’d choose. What to ExpectPrivate cultural day trip in Shangri-LaExplore Songzanlin Monastery with a local Tibetan guidePrivate conversation with a Tibetan lamaTraditional lunch in a Tibetan family homeChoose Nixi black pottery or a local craft breweryTibetan, Chinese and English-speaking guideHotel pick-up and drop-off in Shangri-LaGood to know: If you choose Nixi black pottery, your piece will be fired and ready for collection the following day. If you’re leaving Shangri-La sooner, you can still take part, but may not be able to bring your piece home.
