Cook Real Javanese Food in a Hidden Village Near Yogyakarta
If you don’t just want to eat Javanese food but actually understand where it comes from, this is for you.Set in Tembi Village, surrounded by rice fields, this isn’t a typical cooking class. You’ll walk through the village with your host, pick fresh vegetables, catch your own catfish, and learn how local herbs and spices are used in everyday Javanese kitchens. It feels less like a class and more like being welcomed into village life.Back in the kitchen, you’ll cook one traditional dish using the ingredients you’ve gathered. The recipes range from banana flower gudeg and cassava leaves in coconut milk to steamed fish in banana leaves or Javanese fried noodles. It’s hands-on, relaxed and full of stories along the way. Then you sit down and enjoy the meal you prepared - often with village coffee, laughter and even a bit of singing. Guests consistently say this is the highlight of their trip because it’s not just about food — it’s about experiencing rural Java in a real, warm and personal way. What to ExpectA guided walk through Tembi’s rice fields and village lanesPick fresh vegetables straight from the sourceLearn how everyday Javanese dishes are really madeCook one traditional recipe with hands-on guidanceSit down to a proper village-style feast you preparedTipsIf you need a car + driver to get out to the village, you can book it here. What you'll cookThe class caters to all dietary needs, including vegetarian and vegan - just let us know! Meet your host

Leksa Ganesha is a warm, welcoming artist collective tucked away in the peaceful village of Tembi, just outside Yogyakarta. Founded by Tatang Elmy Wibowo and Aprat Koeswadji, it sits beside Tatang’s family home – a place where his father once created batik before tending to the rice fields. The gallery brings together a talented group of local batik artists, offering them a space to share their work and stay connected to their craft. More than just a gallery, Leksa Ganesha is part of a resilient village rebuilt after the 2016 earthquake, where every visit helps support both the artists and the wider community. It’s a genuine, down-to-earth place rooted in tradition and local pride.
