Experience batik & local cuisine with Beyond the Tourist Trail.
Ditch the dusty guidebooks and chuck the crowds! Leksa Ganesha's tucked away in a secret village, whispers away from Yogyakarta's buzz. Here, we trade tourist trails to unlock the secrets of two local treasures: batik and Javanese cuisine, the kind passed down through generations.Morning starts with a paintbrush ballet on silk. No, really, you get to learn batik from local artists, the kind with ink fingers and wisdom flowing deeper than the rice fields outside. Think intricate patterns telling stories, think unleashing your inner Picasso on fabric (but way cooler). Trust us, this souvenir won't gather dust on a shelf. And then, we dive into a cooking class that's straight out of a food fairytale. Fresh ingredients from nearby fields, sizzling curries whispering ancient recipes, and you, stirring it all up with a grin wider than a bowl of rendang.By the time you polish off the feast, your heart will be full of flavors and your head buzzing with stories. This isn't just a day trip, it's a memory-maker.So, skip the tourist traps and get your hands dirty (in the best way possible). Leksa Ganesha's waiting, with open arms, secret smiles, and a day that'll leave you saying "Yogyakarta? Nope, I went way beyond."What to ExpectAn introduction to the history and culture of batikPractical aspects of batik making, including creating designs using wax and dyeOpportunity to work with traditional and modern batik techniquesCreation of your own batik fabric to take homeA supportive and flexible environment for beginnersCooking 2 traditional Yogyakarta dishesParticipation in catching catfish and harvesting fresh veggiesKnowledge about traditional herbs and spices used in Javanese cuisineSavoring the meal you cooked yourselfDuration: 6.0 hoursInclusions: English-speaking instructor, lunch or early dinner, beverages, all cooking and batik class materialsExclusions: Breakfast and snacksHost description: Leksa Ganesha Gallery, a renowned art gallery showcasing contemporary batik art, founded by local artists Tatang Elmy Wibowo and Aprat Koeswadji

Meet your host
The esteemed Leksa Ganesha Gallery is nestled within the charming Tembi area of the Bantul region, on the periphery of Yogyakarta. Set amidst picturesque rice fields, it showcases a splendid collection of contemporary batik art created by the region's most acclaimed and skillful batik artists and artisans. Leksa Ganesha Gallery, founded by Tatang Elmy Wibowo and Aprat Koeswadji, emerged three years ago to coincide with the establishment of a cooperative of artists, all of whom display their works in this gallery. Attached to Tatang's family home, the gallery is steeped in history and tradition as Tatang's father, a talented batik artist himself, used to work here until he had to prioritize the family's rice fields.
