Immerse in Dali's Bai Culture while staying in rare heritage building
One of the best ways to experience Dali’s Bai culture is through The Linden Centre — the only heritage stay in Xizhou dedicated to preserving historic Bai homes while bringing them to life as a cultural centre.Set in a beautifully restored early 20th-century Bai merchant house, it retains its original charm, from white reflection walls to intricate wood carvings. What makes it especially unique is that the architectural experience is tied to the very building you stay in, with hidden details and stories you won’t find elsewhere. The hosts are deeply knowledgeable and bring Bai traditions, history, and design to life in a personal, engaging way. A guided market visit also offers a glimpse into everyday life in Xizhou, with space to ask questions and explore more deeply.Visits to the Yang Pinxiang Mansion and Baocheng Residence further enrich the experience. Together, they reflect the height of Bai merchant wealth and craftsmanship during the late Qing to Republic of China period. While Yang Pinxiang’s home showcases architectural elegance, the Baocheng Residence—once home to Yan Baocheng, one of Xizhou’s “four richest families”—highlights the town’s legacy as a centre of Bai merchants.More than just a place to stay, this is an immersive way to experience Yunnan’s culture through its architecture, people, and stories. What to ExpectVisit Yang Pinxiang and Baocheng heritage homes, known for their Bai reflection walls and peaceful courtyardsDiscover the Baocheng Residence, once home to Yan Baocheng—part of one of Xizhou’s “four richest families” during the Republic of China era—reflecting the town’s legacy as the birthplace of Bai merchants.Enjoy afternoon tea with panoramic views from the Yang Pinxiang terraceExplore a local market with a guide and learn how locals shop and bargainOptional Bai cooking session to learn traditional dishesStay overnight in a restored Bai courtyard, blending heritage and comfortGood to KnowIncludes guided access to key heritage sites in a small-group settingStay is in a traditional Bai home with modern comfortEasy walking through old streets and courtyards; suitable for most fitness levelsCooking session is optional, at extra cost, and should be booked in advanceExpect a relaxed pace with plenty of cultural insights along the way

Meet your host

Since 2008, American couple Brian and Jeanee have called rural Yunnan home. Their dedication to China’s rich heritage and restoring a historic Bai courtyard in Xizhou, Dali, reflects their respect for local culture and community, inspiring trust in Linden Centre's authentic experience. But their vision never stood alone. Yujiang, and other young Chinese professionals who had studied and worked abroad, began returning and joined the Linden Centre. Together—with local communities and leaders—they’ve shaped Linden Centre into something truly special: an international perspective rooted in local identity.
