Experience local life w/ boat trips, crafts and stories along the Thu Bon River
Just across from Hoi An’s Old Town, Cam Kim Village is where the Thu Bon River stops being “scenery” and becomes the key to understanding local life. Most visitors only do a quick boat ride for photos. This experience is different: it uses the river as the storyline—the lifeline that brings fresh water and fertile silt, shaping generations of livelihoods from fishing and boatbuilding to rice-sheet making and Kim Bong woodworking. You’ll glide through quiet waterways on a hand-rowed boat, guided by locals who know the river like family. They’ll point out the small signs of life most travellers miss—fish, shrimp, aquatic plants—and share how the community is restoring riverside habitats with mangroves and water lilies. The highlight is the people. With a bilingual host translating in real time, you’ll have real conversations with multi-generation locals: a lifelong fisherman who remembers when fish were so abundant you could scoop them by hand; a boatbuilder preserving the knowledge of traditional ghe bầu; and a four-generation rice-sheet family who shows how rural life uses nearly every part of the rice plant. You’ll also get hands-on—try woodcarving in Kim Bong’s famed carpentry village and make Quang noodles with locals, learning the craft and stories behind both. What makes this day truly meaningful is its regenerative story. For years, many families here depended on high-impact fishing methods (like cage nets and trawling) that brought short-term income but slowly drained fish stocks and damaged the river ecosystem. When the river started to change—fewer fish, more fragile waterways—the community made a hard pivot. Instead of extracting more, they chose to protect what they depend on. Today, many locals have become river guardians—earning through community-led learning tourism that rewards protection over extraction.Best for travellers who want depth over checklists: a low-carbon, slow-paced journey—rowed by hand, explored by bike—that helps you understand Vietnam through the people who live it.What to ExpectA boat trip along the Thu Bon River, with insights into its ecosystem and stories of conservation from local fishermenVisits to traditional craft villages like Kim Bong, including a hands-on woodcarving workshop with artisans preserving age-old skillsLearning how to make Quang noodles, discovering the link between rice farming, water, and local historyAuthentic conversations with locals who’ve shifted from destructive fishing methods to river guardians — hear their stories firsthandGood to KnowThis is a private experience lasting about 4 hours, with all activities led in EnglishThe tour involves walking on uneven paths and cycling, so comfortable shoes are recommendedYou’ll support local economies directly; part of your fees go to community-led initiatives and artisansLocal hosts mainly speak Vietnamese. Meet your host
Quach Thanh Thien is the founder of his regenerative tourism initiative since 2021. Raised in the Mekong Delta, Thien saw early on how unfair life could be — a childhood memory of a friend living in tough conditions stayed with him and shaped his path forward. Over the years, he’s worked in alternative education and community-building, slowly realising how everything is connected — from learning and local economies to tourism. His work reflects a thoughtful approach: supporting small, local businesses, working closely with communities, and choosing partners who share his values. Thien’s not in it for show — he simply wants travel to be something that truly benefits the people and places involved.
