Travel down the ancient Tea Horse Road in modern comfort
This experience feels like stepping into an adventure storybook, crossing vast Tibetan landscapes at a slow walking pace by day and arriving each night to a fully set-up camp in the wild.A caravan is a traditional way of travelling through these mountains, where horses carry all the camp equipment and supplies, allowing the camp to move with you each day. It’s how people once crossed these valleys long before roads existed. This journey brings that spirit back in a more comfortable way. Heated Bell tents, lantern light, carpets, and warm meals turn the highlands into a temporary home, while you stay close to the raw landscape around you.Beyond the scenery, it also follows a living tradition. Horse caravans have long been part of Tibetan life in these regions, used for trade, travel, and connection between remote valleys. This experience respectfully continues that rhythm, working with local teams and horse handlers who know these routes deeply. The route passes through Ringha Valley, Monk Grassland, wide alpine meadows, and the Dabosi Valley, with views of Mount Sikha, grazing yak herds, forest edges, and the open Shangri-La plateau. Food is carried by the horses and prepared freshly along the trail, and evenings are spent around the fire rather than in a fixed lodge. What to Expect3D2N caravan trek with hotel pick-up and drop-off in Shangri-La Old TownApprox. 31km total: 8km (Day 1), 15km (Day 2), 8km (Day 3)Route through Ringha Valley, Monk Grassland, alpine pastures, and Dabosi ValleyHorse riding included but optional throughout the journey2 nights in comfortable heated glamping tents with full camp setupAll meals included, including trail picnics and camp dinnersEnglish-speaking guide, transfers, and full caravan support included

Mission Liotard is based in Shangri-La, in the northwest of Yunnan Province, near the border with Tibet. The area sits on the edge of the Himalayas and is known for its high-altitude landscapes and strong Tibetan cultural influence. Founded in 2010 by French writer and traveller Constantin de Slizewicz, the project grew out of his time exploring this remote region and the historic expedition routes that pass through it. The idea behind Mission Liotard is to share this landscape in a way that respects both the environment and local communities, while supporting the development of people living in these high-altitude valleys. The experiences are inspired by the old Tea Horse caravan routes, combining real outdoor exploration with a level of comfort in the wild. Each journey is supported by a mule caravan carrying supplies, making it possible to enjoy well-prepared meals and a comfortable camp even at high altitudes, while staying closely connected to the natural surroundings and local culture.
