Khao Sok, Thailand / Sumba, Indonesia / Gunung Leuser National Park, Indonesia / Mulu National Park, Malaysia .... EN NOG VEEL MEER!
Noot van de redactie
If you're tired of feeling glued to your screens, these trips in the wild will pull you back into the real world. It’s not about switching off and escaping. It’s about living fully in places so raw and beautiful, you won't want to check your notifications (even if you could!).

If you're looking for an easy wildlife adventure, try Khao Sok.

It’s a 160-million-year-old rainforest with wild elephants and sunken caves. It's a short drive from Phuket but may as well be a world away. You can go off-grid here if you stay in a floating rafthouse. Most raft houses have no wifi, but you’ll be too busy kayaking, trekking, and wildlife spotting to notice!

TOP
TIP
The word is slowly getting out on Khao Sok, and it does get crowded in high season from Dec-Mar. If you go at other times or take a private boat, it's bliss!

If you want a gorgeous road trip where you don’t have to do much, Sumba is perfect. You'll get epic scenery and meet some of Indonesia’s last untouched tribes.

It’s Indonesia’s wild frontier, where tribal traditions still thrive, wild horses roam the beaches, and you can drive for hours without seeing another soul. Oh, and the stays here are seriously nice!

Most epic road trip. Wild horses, dancing trees & gorgeous stays.

If your idea of a detox is deep jungle, head to Gunung Leuser. It's remote, dense, and one of the last places on Earth to see wild orangutans (and tigers - though that's rare!).

Trek through thick rainforest, watching your step — and the trees above — not your phone. Sleep in makeshift tents by the river, and trek all day to spot orangutans in trees. It's pure bliss to us.

Spot wild orangutans on a dense jungle hike. Pure forest bliss.

If you’re up for a real explorer’s trip, Mulu is incredible. This UNESCO site is famous for colossal caves, remote trails, and the tough but gorgeous Pinnacles hike.

Once you leave park HQ, there’s no mobile signal — just skywalks through jungle, rafting rivers, surreal pinnacles, and the world’s biggest cave chambers. It feels like you're an explorer discovering new lands.

TOP
TIP
The pinnacles hike is short but tough - with ladders and steep inclines. Rumour is that this is where the Malaysian special forces train, so train up!
Feels like a true explorer's journey to a fantasy landscape.

Bali’s the last place you’d think of for a digital detox, but Munduk still feels like the Bali before tourism.

In its misty (data-less) ancient forests, you’ll find centuries-old trees, a village chief eager to share his stories, and a sacred temple lake where you can camp. Wake to misty mornings and fresh Balinese coffee. Two days here is food for the soul.

Bali’s wild heart. Huge waterfalls, ancient forests, and sacred lake.

Once the mightiest volcano in history, Mt Tambora is a true hidden gem. You can trek to the crater rim on epic adventure that takes you deep into raw, untouched landscapes, reminiscent of the Journey to the Centre of the Earth.

No reception out here — just days of hiking, camping, epic sunrises, and being where history changed the course of the planet.

Trek a volcano so powerful it changed the world’s climate forever.

When people visit Sapa, they talk about its charm — the slow, purposeful life, and the big-hearted people — but also about the crowds.

At Sin Suoi Ho, a little village past Sapa, you get the best of everything. It's pure mountain soul here: sweeping views, slow living, and so much heart. Trek rice paddies, learn about Hmong culture, and just enjoy home-cooked meals.

Pure mountain soul, untouched and magical.

Maliau Basin is one of the last wild places on Earth — a 130-million-year-old rainforest so remote and untouched, no human has ever lived there. To this very day, few people have heard of Maliau Basin.

With no reception and no one around, it’s just you and the jungle here. Hike to roaring Maliau Falls, camp by rivers, spot wildlife, and walk trails barely touched by humankind.

Borneo's Lost World. One of earth's most untouched rainforests.

If you want a slow jungle adventure, Tanjung Puting is perfect. You’ll drift down Borneo’s rivers on a traditional boat, spotting wild orangutans in the trees. You'll also do some easy hikes to spot them at jungle feeding stations. After Day 2, the signal drops and you’ll be fully lost in sunsets, river sounds, and slow mornings on deck. Perfect for couples or solo travellers!

World's capital of wild orangutans, with 30-40K roaming free.

If you want an easy digital detox with serious wow factor, Komodo is it!

It’s a little busier than other spots on this list, but once you're out on the boat, it’s just endless islands, no wifi, and magic. Snorkel with mantas, spot dragons, lounge on pink beaches, & sail in gorgeous landscapes. The boats here are also seriously nice, so you're not roughing it out!

TOP
TIP
Skip rainy season (Jan-Mar) as the nicest boats don't sail then. Best time to visit is April to May, or Sep to Dec (most wildlife!). Spend 3D2N on a boat here.
Island hopping with dragons, pink beaches & serious wow factor.
LEUKE DINGEN HIER:
Only place with Komodo dragons
Snorkel with manta rays & turtles
Chill on surreal pink beaches
