Review Body: This is definitely a must do experience if you are in Lijiang and love coffee! I've done a few coffee tasting experiences before but this one is really cool because I got to roast my own coffee beans for the first time. Plus, the space itself is gorgeous. Phoebe's family designed and built it - there's a big garden, cats wandering around and snow mountains in the background. It's hard not to love this place. What's interesting is that Yunnan's specialty coffee scene is relatively new (only about 10 years old), and Phoebe's family were one of the OG's who switched from commercial instant coffee to exploring specialty coffee in Yunnan back in 2018 - so it was pretty cool to learn from them. We got to smell many different beans from different regions across Yunnan and learn why they all taste so different (climate, altitude, rainfall etc). We learnt from Phoebe that some tea plantations in Pu'er are also growing coffee because its more profitable, and the result is a very unique tea like quality to coffee which you can't find anywhere else in the world. Then, we did a proper tasting where we picked 3 different beans (including the tea-like coffee bean) to try. It's all pour over style and Phoebe explains what makes each one special. We could tell how much Phoebe loves what she does. She's very fluent in English (studied in the States) and explains everything so clearly and patiently, no matter what level of coffee knowledge you come in with. She also served us delicious homemade pastries to go along! It was pumpkin season when we went so we had a yummy pumpkin cheesecake. Lastly, manual roasting. Phoebe's dad believes manual roasting is far superior to the high-tech machine roasting where everything is controlled by graphs and data, In fact, it's a requirement for all his barista students to master manual roasting before anything else. So we got to do it ourselves - hand roasting for 10 mins under Phoebe's guidance. She then bagged them up and we got to write our names on it. This is something I'll be recommending to all my friends if they come to Lijiang :)

Review Body: We had such a wonderful experience at this coffee workshop with a local Yunnan coffee-roasting family! Phoebe was incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and helpful throughout the whole workshop. It was a real pleasure listening to her speak so passionately about coffee and sharing her knowledge with us. We learned so much, not only about coffee itself, but also about the different beans, where they come from, and the entire roasting process. What made the experience especially memorable was how personal and authentic it felt. At the end, we even had the opportunity to roast our own coffee beans, which we could take home with us. It was such a fun way to finish the workshop and have a little piece of the experience to remember. We would definitely recommend this workshop to anyone interested in coffee, especially if you want to learn more about Yunnan coffee from people who are genuinely passionate about it. Thank you, Phoebe, for such a lovely and educational experience! ☕️❤️

Review Body: The coffee omakase with Phoebe ended up being one of the best surprises of the trip. We were there for four to six hours, and it never felt long. The venue itself was picturesque enough to just sit in, and Phoebe walked us through the history of Yunnan coffee since her family are some of the region's main distributors and educators on it. In between, we spent a good chunk of time with the resident goats and cats wandering around the property. It felt less like a tasting and more like an afternoon at someone's actual home.

Review Body: The coffee experience was so enjoyable, and Pheobe was not only really friendly but also really knowledgeable especially with how her family were some of the pioneers of the coffee industry in Yunnan! Tasting the different beans was something I really liked, especially as someone who loves coffee, but my favourite moment had to be learning to roast coffee beans by hand! Also extra plus points for their space being gorgeous and set with the mountains in the background!

Some of the best coffee we tried in Yunnan - taste it, then roast your own!
If you love coffee, this was one of our favourite finds in Yunnan. You’ll taste some of the best Yunnan coffee we tried, learn what makes China’s biggest coffee-growing region so interesting, and roast your own beans with a family who have been doing coffee for more than 30 years. Their café and roastery is lovely too - tucked away in a garden, far from the crowds of Lijiang Old Town. Yunnan grows around 90% of China’s coffee, but not all coffee here is good! Lijiang has lots of “ticket cafés” - beautiful places where people come for the photo and the coffee is almost an afterthought. Her family is the opposite. They’ve worked in coffee since 1993 and were among the earlier producers here to move from commercial to specialty coffee. Today, they work closely with local farms and have trained more than 500 baristas across China.Your host Phoebe is the second generation, and we loved chatting with her. She worked as a barista and ran cafés in Seattle before coming home to join the family business. She’s incredibly knowledgeable, fluent in English and refreshingly candid - ask her what’s good, bad or completely overhyped in Yunnan coffee and she’ll tell you! You’ll smell, taste and roast your way through Yunnan coffee. Smell beans from different parts of the province, taste three coffees side by side, then choose your favourite to roast yourself by hand. Phoebe’s dad is old-school and believes you should learn to roast with your eyes, nose and ears before relying on fancy machines. We love that. At the end, pack up your freshly roasted beans and take them home. What to ExpectLearn about Yunnan coffee from a family who have worked in it for over 30 years!Smell and compare beans from different parts of YunnanChoose three coffees to taste side by sideLearn how origin, processing and roasting change the flavourEnjoy homemade seasonal bites with your tastingChoose your favourite beans and roast them by handPack your freshly roasted coffee to take homeGood to KnowNo coffee knowledge neededPhoebe is fluent in English, so ask away!Takes place at the family’s café and roastery in Baisha Old TownPhoebe is fluent in English — she lived in the US for three years — so feel free to ask her anything! She's incredibly knowledgeable about coffee and is always happy to share stories about Yunnan coffee, her family's journey, and answer any questions you have.

Phoebe's family has been in coffee since 1993 — long before Yunnan coffee was cool. Her parents started out growing commercial coffee before becoming some of the first producers in Yunnan to make the leap into specialty coffee — choosing to focus on quality over quantity, and on bringing out the unique character of each region. Today, they're part of the reason Yunnan is gaining recognition as China's leading coffee-producing region. Phoebe herself spent six years in Seattle, where she worked as a barista to pay her tuition and ended up managing three cafes there. She came home to Lijiang to help with her family's specialty coffee dream. Her dad oversees all the roasting, her mum trains baristas from all over China, and Phoebe brings it all together as your host. She's warm, fluent in English, and genuinely one of our favourite people to talk coffee with — the more questions you ask, the more she gets excited to share! From their family-run workshop in Lijiang, they share coffees sourced from different parts of Yunnan, giving guests a clearer sense of just how varied the region’s coffee can be. It’s a thoughtful introduction to one of China’s key coffee-growing areas, shaped by real hands-on experience at every stage.
