Support conservation efforts and explore the world's rarest wildlife
This 3D2N stay takes you deep into Deramakot Forest Reserve with experienced wildlife guides who know the forest inside out. Rather than following a fixed schedule, they adjust each safari based on recent sightings, animal movement and weather conditions, giving you the best chance of spotting pygmy elephants, orangutans, leopard cats, civets and, with a lot of luck, the elusive clouded leopard. What sets this experience apart is the amount of time spent searching for wildlife. Instead of squeezing in short drives between other activities, you'll be out during the forest's most active hours, at dawn, late afternoon, dusk, and after dark. On the second day alone, you'll spend around seven hours on safari, with departures staggered to avoid other vehicles and increase your chances of quieter wildlife encounters.Deramakot was the first tropical forest reserve recognised by the Forest Stewardship Council, and tourism here helps show the value of keeping rainforest standing in an area under pressure from oil palm. Accommodation at Deramakot is intentionally simple. You're not paying for luxury lodging, you're paying for experienced wildlife guides and as much quality time in the forest as possible, when wildlife is most active. What to ExpectJoin-in 3D2N wildlife safari in Deramakot Forest ReserveReturn transfers between Telupid and Deramakot, including a 2 to 2.5 hour drive on unpaved forest roads2 nights in basic, comfortable air-conditioned accommodation with ensuite bathroomExtensive guided 4WD safaris with experienced wildlife guides, including a night safari on arrival day and around 7 hours in the field on Day 2Safari timings planned around the best wildlife activity, usually at dawn, late afternoon and after darkChance to look for pygmy elephants, orangutans, gibbons, civets, leopard cats and other nocturnal wildlifeGood to KnowBest for wildlife-focused travellers. Tom has been creating small, personalised adventures in Sarawak and Sabah since 2011. Together with his team, he draws on over 30 years of firsthand experience exploring Borneo’s rainforests, lesser-known trails, and village communities to shape trips that feel more personal than standard tours. He keeps groups small and travel low-impact, so guests can experience Borneo at a slower pace. What stands out most is how closely he works with local communities—training and employing guides, porters, and hosts so each trip supports local livelihoods. He also helps travellers join community-based projects, making the experience feel grounded in the people and places that make Borneo special.
