Helpful Questions from Other Travellers

Q
How do I get there?
A
The best way to travel to East Coast is to take your time and make a couple of overnight stops on the way. Go with the Colombo-Ella-Arugam Bay route. It'll be a rewarding journey as you witness the spectacular views of the Sri Lankan hill country en route to Ella. When you are in Ella, take the bus to Monaragala, either direct or stopover in Wellawaya. From there you take the bus to Pottuvil and then Arugam Bay. However, if you really need to travel in a day there are multiple options available. Buses are available from Colombo to Pottuvil. The journey will take about 7 hours by night and 10 hours by day.
Q
Do I need to go with a guide?
A
If you are just starting to learn how to surf, you will definitely want to hire an instructor at least for the initial few lessons. If you are serious about mastering the waves, you should join a longer lesson (or a surf camp) where you will have multiple hours to practice each day.
Q
Do I need to train up?
A
If you are a beginner you should know how to swim and be comfortable with vigorous exercise for a few hours at a time. One should be certified and well experienced for surfing at Intermediate and Advanced levels.
Q
What's the best time to go?
A
The best months to visit are May, June, July, August, September
We recommend the above period because you would have:
  • Good weather
  • the best waves for surfing
