Skip the busier mangrove routes and discover Kubang Badak.
Away from Langkawi’s busier tourist routes, Kubang Badak River offers a quieter way to experience the island’s wild side. This lesser-known corner of Langkawi is where calm waterways, mangrove forests and ancient limestone landscapes come together — with fewer crowds and more space to truly take in the surroundings.Paddle through the peaceful river at water level, where the slower pace lets you notice the details often missed on a typical sightseeing trip. With a naturalist guide leading the way, discover the wildlife, plants and stories that make this ecosystem special — from sea eagles and kingfishers soaring overhead to mudskippers and monitor lizards along the mangrove banks.Beyond the scenery, Kubang Badak reveals layers of Langkawi’s natural and cultural history. Visit old charcoal kiln ruins that tell the story of traditional mangrove charcoal production, and explore Pinang Cave, an ancient sea cave shaped by changing sea levels thousands of years ago.End the adventure with a refreshing swim at Jemuruk Island before enjoying lunch at a local floating restaurant. More than just a kayaking trip, this is a chance to explore a quieter, less-seen side of Langkawi — where nature, history and adventure come together. What to Expect4-hour join-in kayaking trip from Kubang Badak JettyShort safety briefing and basic paddling tutorial before startingRelaxed paddle through the mangrove forest reserve with an English-speaking nature guideWildlife spotting opportunities for birds, mudskippers and monitor lizardsStops at an old charcoal kiln and Pinang CaveSwim stop at Jemuruk IslandSet lunch at a local floating restaurantKayak equipment and bottled water includedGood to KnowMeet-up is at Kubang Badak Jetty. Meet your host
Founded in 1993 by a naturalist, this host has deep roots in field biology, wildlife tracking, and low-impact eco-tourism. Based in Langkawi and now also in Desaru Coast, they create nature experiences that help guests understand local ecosystems without disturbing them. Their tours are shaped by a strong Leave No Trace approach, with a focus on conservation education rather than just sightseeing. They also work closely with surrounding communities, training local guides as naturalists and storytellers. Beyond tours, they support wildlife preservation, join mangrove reforestation and beach clean-ups, and take part in local education efforts around sustainable tourism.
