A slow immersion into Tibetan local life, Songzanlin Monastery, and Napa Lake
If you want to experience Shangri-La through the lens of local Tibetan life, this private 2D2N journey places you in the home of a Tibetan family for two nights. You’ll spend time sharing meals, conversations, and everyday moments with your hosts, offering a deeper and more personal connection to the region. Travel throughout the experience with a local Tibetan English-speaking guide, helping you connect more deeply with the places and people you meet. The homestay is at the centre of the experience. You’ll return to the same family each evening, walk through the village together, and visit another Tibetan household for lunch, allowing you to experience different aspects of local life and hospitality in a natural, unhurried way.Alongside the homestay experience, you’ll explore some of Shangri-La’s most important cultural and natural landmarks with a local Tibetan guide. At Songzanlin Monastery, you’ll learn about monastery life, Tibetan Buddhism, local customs, and the stories behind the spaces you visit, going beyond a typical sightseeing stop. At Napa Lake, the landscape opens into wide grasslands, mountain views, grazing yaks, and seasonal birdlife that showcase the beauty and slower rhythm of the Tibetan plateau. *Napa Lake changes with the seasons, so landscapes and wildlife sightings vary throughout the yearWhat to ExpectAccompanied by a local Tibetan English-speaking guide throughout the experience3D2N experience based in a Tibetan village homestayEnjoy Tibetan meals and homemade breakfastsTime to experience village life and daily Tibetan customsGuided visit to Songzanlin Monastery with entrance tickets includedVisit to Napa Lake Wetland ReserveScenic views of grasslands, mountains, yaks, and seasonal birdlifePickup and drop-off between Shangri-La town and the village

Meet your host
Founded by Tibetan Khampa explorer and former monk Dakpa Kelden, this journey is rooted in a deep connection to the ancient Tea Horse Road and Tibetan culture. After returning to Shangri-La as a teenager, Dakpa went on to establish one of the region’s first eco-tourism companies, with a focus on meaningful travel experiences, local communities, and cultural preservation.
Beyond tourism, he has also been involved in protecting Tibetan indigenous arts and heritage across the region.
For travellers, this offers a more locally rooted and personal way to experience the landscapes, culture, and stories of the Tibetan highlands.
