Journey through the hidden side of Shangri-La with a local Tibetan guide
Most people visiting Shangri-La hire a driver to take them to the famous places they've seen online. But the best parts of this region aren't the ones on Google Maps - they're the hidden valleys, sacred caves and tiny villages you'd never know to ask for, with a fraction of the crowds. This private 6-day road trip is for travellers who want to see that lesser-known side. You'll travel by private 4WD with Seek Sophie guide Tsebho, who has spent 20+ years exploring every corner of this region.Over 6 days, you'll journey from Shangri-La to Niru, Dechen, Meili and Tacheng, mixing the well-known landmarks with places that don't appear on most itineraries. Niru alone is worth the trip - a small, remote village with a beautiful waterfall hike. You'll drive the spectacular Baima Snow Mountain passes that most drivers skip in favour for the faster tunnel, climb a ladder into a sacred cave still used by Tibetan pilgrims, and see the endangered snub-nosed monkeys - some of the rarest monkeys in the world, and even rarer than the giant panda! What makes this 6 day Shangri-La trip special is travelling with Seek Sophie guide Tsebho. Tsebho grew up in a nomadic yak-herding family, raced horses as a jockey until 15, worked as a translator for Tibetologists, is a passionate botanist, and goes on crazy snow mountain adventures with his cousin to find new unexplored corners of Shangri-La.Travelling with Tsebho means hearing incredible stories throughout the journey and experiencing Shangri-La through the people he knows best. Like hotpot in the home of the family where everything is grown by them and served with homemade barley liquor. Breakfast at a tiny local shop Tsebho always stops at when he's in the area, serving freshly baked bread with yak cheese. You'll stay at cosy guesthouses throughout your 6 day journey, including Tsebho's own guesthouse. If you want cultural depth and landscapes most travellers never see - not just a checklist of scenic stops - this is the trip. Come curious and ask lots of questions: the more you ask, the more Tsebho opens up!What to ExpectPrivate 6-day, 5-night overland trip in a 4WD Jeep with an English-speaking Tibetan guide-driverVisits to Songzanlin Monastery, Shangri-La Old Town, Napa Lake, Dhondup Ling Monastery, Cizhong Catholic Church and the Snub-nosed Monkey ParkA 4-hour hike to Nizu Waterfalls and a 1-1.5 hour walk along a pilgrimage trail to a hilltop cave templeSunrise stop at Wunong Ding for views of Meili Snow Mountain, weather permitting5 nights of accommodation on a double-sharing basis, including a family-run guesthouse stay in Nizu VillageLunches and dinners, entrance fees, tolls, parking, water and snacks includedTea and coffee during scenic stops, depending on weather and timingGood to KnowThis route stays at high altitude.
