Review Body: At first, I was uncertain and nervous about joining the class as my Mandarin is not very strong , but I am glad I did. I am learning calligraphy and improving my Mandarin in a warm and fun-filled environment. Wan 老师 is patient and more importantly, supports and encourages our creative endeavours.

Review Body: No prerequisite needed other than an open mind and a desire to learn and explore! Wan is a very patient tutor and the lessons are made more meaningful as he shares the stories of the poems and calligraphers. I appreciate how he allows each of us to progress at our own pace.

Itinerary

Itinerary Day 1
Itinerary Summary: Discover the heritage and mindfulness of Chinese Calligraphy
Itinerary Description: 1. 文房四宝 — The Four Treasures of the Study Begin by discovering the four essential treasures of Chinese calligraphy: the brush, ink, paper and inkstone, and how each contributes to the art of brush writing. 2. 楷 · 行 · 草 — Three Major Calligraphic Scripts Learn about the three major calligraphic scripts through live demonstration: Regular, Semi-Cursive and Cursive, and how different brush movements create different forms and expressions. 3. The World of Chinese Calligraphy — From Heritage to Personal Journey Discover the fascinating world behind Chinese calligraphy, from its history and cultural heritage to its place among the 六艺 (Six Arts), its practice by emperors and scholars through the ages, and stories such as the 兰亭序 (Lanting Prologue). Wan will also share his personal journey with brush and ink, and how calligraphy has not only enabled him to find greater calm and balance amid the busyness of daily life, but has also opened the door to new friendships and connections through the joy of sharing calligraphy with others. 4. Brushwork & Writing Practice Learn practical techniques for brush handling, ink control and fundamental strokes, with individual coaching to refine your brushwork and writing. 5. Tea & Refreshments Take a relaxed pause with tea and light refreshments. 6. Write Your Blessing Create your own 恩 (En) or 福 (Fu) on premium calligraphy paper, applying the techniques you have learned with guidance along the way. 恩 (En) represents grace, kindness and gratitude, making it a meaningful choice for Christmas. 福 (Fu) represents blessings and good fortune, making it a fitting choice for Chinese New Year. Your finished artwork can be displayed at home as seasonal décor or given to family and friends as a personal blessing. 7. Red Stamp & Take Home Add a traditional red stamp to your finished artwork and take home your completed piece. Choose from an assortment of 闲章 (xiánzhāng) — traditional leisure seals featuring distinctive words, phrases or philosophical statements that add a personal touch to each artwork.

Discover the joy and meaning behind Chinese Calligraphy
Chinese calligraphy isn’t simply beautiful handwriting — it has long been a way of expressing character, culture and a person’s state of mind. That’s also why it mattered so much to China’s emperors where mastering the brush demonstrated discipline and moral character, while their written words became visible expressions of imperial authority. In this private two-hour class, you’ll explore the art with Wan, who has practised for more than 20 years and sees every brushstroke as a reflection of the person making it.For Wan, Calligraphy has also been a way to reconnect with his family’s roots. More than a century after his great-grandfather—one of Guangdong’s four great physicians—founded Chong Zheng Cottage as a place for both healing and classical learning, Wan is carrying his family’s legacy of holistic healing forward in his own way: through artistic expression. His knowledge stretches from famous works such as the Orchid Pavilion to the Tang and Song poetry he loves, but he also shares something more personal: how calligraphy helps him slow down, return to himself and find a joy he can’t quite put into words. Then it’s your turn to put brush to paper. Wan will guide you through the basic strokes and techniques before helping you create either 恩 (grace) or 福 (prosperity). Keep it as a blessing over your own home or give it to someone you love! By the end, you may leave with a little of the joy Wan speaks of, re-energised by this centuries-old art. What to Expect2-hour private introduction to Chinese calligraphyLearn the history and cultural significance of calligraphyHear stories behind famous works such as the Orchid PavilionPractise correct brush grip and basic brush strokesCreate a take-home piece of either 恩 (grace) or 福 (prosperity)All materials included: brush, premium xuan paper and inkLight refreshments providedGood to KnowBilingual session in English and/or MandarinYou may request specific characters that you'd like to write (up to 2 characters maximum). ## About the Host Wan’s journey with Chinese calligraphy began in 2003 at the Singapore Calligraphy Centre. Over the past 23 years, he has continued to deepen his practice — progressing from Regular Script (楷书) to Semi-Cursive (行书) and Cursive Script (草书), with a particular appreciation for the expressive and flowing qualities of brush and ink. Since 2019, Wan has also been sharing his practice through teaching. In 2021, he founded Chong Zheng Calligraphy Studio · 崇正草堂, carrying forward a family name and heritage rooted in Chinese learning and culture. Wan’s calligraphy journey has also taken him into the wider international calligraphy community. He exhibited at the Dainippon Calligraphy Institute Exhibition in Japan for three consecutive years from 2021 to 2023, and at the Canada-China Calligraphy Spring Exhibition from its inaugural exhibition in 2023 through its fourth edition in 2026. He also participated in the Dr. Tan Tsze Chor Art Award in 2023 and 2024, and was invited in 2024 to join the Montreal Chinese Calligraphers Association as an Official Partner. An organisational psychologist by training, Wan is co-founder of a work-tech startup and was formerly Learning & Development Director at a global FTSE100 company. As a psychologist and coach, he brings an experiential approach to his teaching, helping learners discover their own insights through the practice of Chinese brush writing. Wan conducts his sessions in English and Mandarin and was trained in brush writing using both the right and left hand. For him, calligraphy is not simply about writing beautiful characters, but about the journey of practice — slowing down, developing sensitivity and discovering something of oneself through brush, ink and paper.
