Why go
It is the largest Buddhist temple in the world, and it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Indonesia. The temple was built in the 9th century, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's also sinking rapidly (7m to date!) so do visit before it's too late

What to do or see here
Basically just walk around the exterior of the temple. There are lots of levels with carvings on the walls, and unique stupas with Buddha statues inside. We would highly recommend going with a guide who can share stories about the area to give it more colour.

Best Time to Go
- Go during dry season from April to October. However it's quite an easy walk around so even if it rains, if you wear a poncho and it'll be bearable.
- Avoid local public holidays and weekends as the crowds are overwhelming then!

Who is it for?
Buddhists, anyone who loves history, photography (there are some great shots you can take here!), or who just wants to check off their bucket list - it is UNESCO and the largest Buddhist temple in the world afterall!

Top Tips
- To show respect, make sure your knees and shoulders are covered. However no one is strictly enforcing this there
- At the moment, you can't do the sunrise package at Borobudur. So instead we would highly recommend doing the sunrise hike up Puthuk Setumbu that’s nearby and really beautiful
- There is no shelter so it gets very hot here! Wear lots of suncreen
