From leaf to fabric - immerse yourself in authentic, messy, magical dyeing.
Up in the quiet hills of Chiang Dao, indigo isn’t just a pretty blue, it’s an ancient craft that’s shaped local life for generations. The plants thrive in this rich northern soil, producing deep, vivid dye. Every piece you make connects you to this place in a way souvenirs never could. At Hui’s calm little studio, you’ll slow your hands and your mind. Hui brings a rare blend of expertise—she trained in Japan for over a decade mastering garment making and Japanese dye techniques, then settled here in Chiang Dao with her family. Here, she revives traditional Thai dyeing wisdom passed down through local artisans in the village.Pick fresh leaves from the garden, stir your own dye vat, and learn Hui’s secret blend of techniques—part Japanese craft, part northern Thai heritage. These aren’t steps you’ll find on YouTube—they’re living skills, kept alive by Hui and her dedicated team of local women artisans who share their passion and knowledge. When you’re ready to rest, your room is just steps away. Simple, calm, and filled with Hui’s own indigo textiles, each room has a private bathroom, a balcony, and big Doi Luang Chiang Dao views. You’ll enjoy homemade Thai breakfasts and lunches, freshly cooked with local ingredients (vegan options available). In the evenings, you’re free to wander to a nearby local eatery, try a casual dinner spot, or simply unwind with snacks—it’s all part of the laid-back pace here. What to ExpectMake your own indigo dye - pick the leaves, stir the vat, dip the clothLearn Hui’s signature techniques - a blend of Japanese & Thai secrets you won’t find elsewhereTry natural orange dye for a splash of sunshine alongside the deep bluesCraft 8 pieces to take home : bandanas, shawls, fisherman pants & moreConnect with local women artisans. Meet your host
Hui is the heart of a quiet studio tucked away in the foothills of northern Thailand. After spending over a decade in Japan, she returned home with more than just skills. She came back with a dream to live gently and stay close to the land.
She began growing indigo with her own hands and invited local women, mothers, elders, and artisans to join her. Together, they slowly dye each piece with care and intention, using only what nature provides. No chemicals, no shortcuts, just patience and trust in the beauty that unfolds over time.
For Hui, indigo is more than a color. It is a way of life, a symbol of patience, roots, and quiet transformation. In this little space they have created, community and tradition are not only preserved but deeply cherished. It is a place where everything grows slowly and meaningfully, just as it should.
