If you want a Phong Nha cave trip with a real human story behind it, this one stands out. Before heading into Ruc Mon Cave, you’ll visit Hoa Son village near the Laos border to meet the Ruc people, who lived in caves until 2007. You’ll be one of the rare few to step inside their homes for a cup of tea and a glimpse into a way of life that most travellers never hear about, let alone experience.Ruc Mon is one of the biggest caves in the Phong Nha buffer zone, but very few travellers get here. Access is tightly controlled to protect the cave, so you go in with an experienced guide and local porter team through fields, riverside trails and forest.Inside, it gets properly adventurous. You’ll move through cool cave water, climb across million-year-old mineral layers, and explore three cave levels lined with huge stalactites and limestone formations.
