How Many Days Do You Need in Komodo? 1 Day vs 2D1N vs 3D2N
We'd recommend 3D2N or even longer! Here's why.

We've been to Komodo National Park more than 25 times, and if we had to choose, we'd spend at least 3D2N here, or 4D3N if you can!
The longer trips actually take you further into Komodo National Park, to places that the shorter trips don't have time to reach. One of our favourites is Gili Lawa, which we actually prefer to the much more famous Padar Island. It's gorgeous savannah landscape with wild deer, and only a handful of people!
But if you're short on time or get seasick, a one-day Seek Sophie speedboat is a good compromise and covers Komodo's main highlights!
At a Glance
- 1 Day trip: If you have 1 day in Komodo - take a Seek Sophie speedboat trip that will cover 6 islands (same as a 2D1N boat trip!) There are also slow boats that do the 1 day trip but you'll only see 3 islands.
- 2D1N: We don't recommend 2D1N Komodo boat trips as the boats that do 2D1N trips tend to be very basic (and we cannot vouch for their safety). These are the only 2D1N trips we'd recommend to our friends and family.
- 3D2N (Recommended): 3D2N Seek Sophie boat trips are the most popular join-in trips in Komodo. We think 3D2N is a good amount of time to spend, and you can cover 9 islands.
- 4D3N (Recommended): This is our top choice for Komodo as you get to see more interesting islands like Gili Lawa! However most join-in boats won't do 4D3N, so you'll need a private charter.

1 Day Komodo trips

Recommended for: If you only have one day in Komodo or if you get seasick/don't want to sleep on a boat, take a speedboat (not a slow boat).
There are two kinds of day trips in Komodo: slow boats and speedboats. The difference isn't small. A slow boat will usually manage around three stops, while a speedboat can get to around six.
This Seek Sophie speedboat will take you to Padar Island, Komodo Island to see the dragons, Pink Beach, Taka Makassar, Manta Point and a snorkelling spot such as Siaba Besar, all in one day.
So if you're short on time, you really don't need to feel like you're missing Komodo altogether by doing a day trip. You'll see most of the places people come here for.
The downside of the day trip is that you're seeing the classic Komodo circuit and you won't get as far into the National Park. Most day trips return before Kalong Island, where huge numbers of flying foxes fly out of the cave - it's super magical and one of our fave views in Komodo National Park! If you do want to see Kalong Island and still want to do a day trip, you'll need to do a private speedboat or a day trip that includes Kalong Island.
2D1N Komodo Trips

Recommended for: We won't recommend this unless you take a 2D1N Phinisi boat (which has better safety standards).
We generally wouldn't recommend 2D1N. If you do choose it, we'd only go on a proper Phinisi. There are very few Phinisis doing 2D1N join-in trips, and many of the alternatives are basic boats that we wouldn't take because of safety concerns.
Two days is also quite short. It takes roughly two hours on a Phinisi just to get from Labuan Bajo towards Komodo National Park, so a fair bit of your trip is spent getting there and back. You'll usually see around six or seven highlights — Kelor, Komodo dragons, Kalong, Padar, Pink Beach and Manta Point or Taka Makassar — which isn't that different from what a one-day speedboat can cover.
The main reason we're cautious about 2D1N, though, is safety. We've stopped offering basic boats on Seek Sophie because of safety concerns, and several Komodo boats sink each year. This isn't somewhere we'd choose the cheapest boat just to get an extra night at sea.
There are only a small handful of 2D1N boats we'd trust. If none of those fit your dates, we'd do a one-day speedboat instead, or make time for a 3D2N Phinisi.
3D2N Komodo Trips

Recommended for: Most travellers. If you have the time, this is the minimum we'd recommend to properly see Komodo.
For most people, we'd recommend a 3D2N Phinisi boat trip on Seek Sophie. You'll usually get around nine stops, including Padar, Pink Beach, Komodo dragons, Manta Point and Kalong Island at sunset.
If you can, look for a 3D2N itinerary that includes Gili Lawa (very rare!). It's much less visited than Padar, with gorgeous views over the islands - and we actually think it's much prettier! Gili Lawa is usually found on longer or private itineraries, though there are now a small number of 3D2N join-in Phinisis that go there.
3D2N also has the biggest choice of Phinisis, from good-value boats to very luxe ones, and plenty of join-in departures. So unless you're really short on time, this is the Komodo trip we'd recommend to most travellers.
4D3N Komodo Trips

Recommended for: If you have the time and want to see the best of Komodo, especially the quieter spots that most trips don't reach.
If time and budget aren't an issue, we'd recommend the 4D3N Seek Sophie Komodo trips. You'll usually get around 12 stops, and the extra day means you can go beyond the standard Padar–Pink Beach–Manta Point circuit to places like Gili Lawa and quieter snorkelling spots.
This is where we think Komodo gets really special. On some 4D3N itineraries you'll get to Gili Lawa, Sabolo and Hatamin, while others include quieter spots like Pengah and Mawan. You can also get better timings at the famous places - for example, hiking Padar at sunset rather than joining the morning crowds.
The main downside is that there aren't many 4D3N join-in departures. There are a handful on Seek Sophie, but 3D2N join-in trips is much more common. So depending on your dates you may need to charter a private Phinisi. If you're travelling in a group, we'd definitely consider it.
For us, 4D3N is the best way to see Komodo. You get all the famous sights, but also enough time to see the quieter parts of the National Park that most travellers miss. If you charter a private Phinisi, you can also customise your itinerary!
Final tip: the boat is the most important choice
Whichever trip you choose, we'd prioritise a safe boat over squeezing in an extra day. This matters most for 2D1N, where there are very few Phinisis and lots of cheap basic boats. We've stopped offering basic boats on Seek Sophie because of safety concerns, and several boats sink around Komodo each year. We'd much rather do a one-day speedboat than spend two or three days on a boat we didn't trust.
For any overnight trip, we'd choose a proper Phinisi with an experienced operator and good safety standards.
We've been to Komodo over 25 times, and safety here isn't something we take for granted. Boat standards vary widely between operators, so we handpick every boat on Seek Sophie, inspect them regularly and mystery shop trips to see what they're actually like. If a boat no longer meets our standards, we remove it - we only list boats we'd be comfortable putting our own friends and family on.

Komodo National Park Experiences FAQs
How much are the Komodo park fees?
Park fees are separate from your boat tour and change frequently, so always check before your trip.
- As of January 2026, Komodo park fees for Foreigners/Kitas holders are IDR 250,000 per person for the 1 day trip and IDR 650,000 per person for the 3D2N trip.
- The park fees for locals are IDR 150,000 for the 1 day trip and IDR 350,000 per person for the 3D2N trip.
- Please note this can change at any time without notice. Best to check with your boat company host a day or two before if there have been any recent changes.
💡 Important to know:
- Fees vary depending on the island and activities (e.g., diving costs more).
- Weekends are more expensive than weekdays.
- Cash only – No credit cards accepted. Bring enough IDR before heading out!
- Many of our boats now include park fees in the price - please check in the inclusions to see if park fees are now included.
Do I need to pay extra park fees based on my itinerary?
Yes, but you don’t need to pay separately for each island or activity. Your boat crew will collect the full Komodo Park fee in advance, which is why the price is given as a range. The total amount depends on the specific islands and activities included in your itinerary.
If you plan to bring a drone, there is an additional fee, and you’ll need to apply for a permit at least 3 days in advance (see details below).
What is this mysterious Komodo park fee?
This is the mandatory entrance fee for Komodo National Park, and it’s usually not included in your boat price. As of 2026, foreigners typically pay about IDR 250,000 for a 1-day trip and around IDR 650,000 for a 3D2N trip. The exact amount can vary depending on the islands visited and whether you're there on a weekend or weekday. Your boat operator will confirm the final amount before your trip.
Do I need to pay park fees in cash?
Park fees will be paid in cash only. Note that there are no ATMs on Komodo Islands so you need to bring enough IDR before heading to the islands (i.e. before your boat trip starts). Note that many of our boats now include park fees in the price - please check in the inclusions to see if park fees are now included.
How do I get from Labuan Bajo to Komodo National Park?
By boat! It takes 1–2 hours depending on whether you are taking a slow boat or a speedboat. You can choose between:
- Speedboat (1-day trip) – Fast, covers more places in a day. You can cover 6 islands in Komodo National Park in 1 day on a speedboat trip.
- Slow boat / Phinisi (overnight trip) – Slower traditional boats - you can cover 3 islands in Komodo National Park in 1 day on a traditional boat.
