Weligama Surfing and Yoga

Weligama rests at the very bottom of the teardrop-shaped Sri Lankan island, in the center of Weligama Bay. The vibe here is relaxed and playful, with extremely friendly locals and beginner and advanced surfers from all over the world. Spend an idyllic week here working on your surfing skills in the bay, or enjoying your yoga practice on the beach. In the evenings, reward yourself with delicious seafood meals and sunsets from the terraces of the many bungalows that line the beaches.

Depending on the option you choose, you will need to head to either Ahangama town (for the Camp Poe surfing options), or Weligama town (for the other options). You can get there by train, bus or car from Colombo. 🚌 If you are going by bus, you will need to take a bus to Mataram station, which takes approximately 5 hours. From Mataram station, you will need to take a tuk tuk to Weligama town or Ahangama town. This shouldn't cost more than LKR 5000-8000, and will take 30 minutes to Weligama town, and 45 minutes to Ahangama town. 🚂 If you're going by train, you will need to take a train to Weligama station, which takes approximately 3.5 hours. Once you arrive to Weligama station, you will need to get a tuk tuk to get to Weligama town or Ahangama town. This shouldn't cost more than LKR 200-400, and will take 10 minutes to Weligama town, and 20 minutes to Ahangama town. 🚗 You can also hire a private car and driver from Colombo - it will take approximately 2.5 and 3 hours each way by car to get to Weligama town and Ahangama town respectively. You can book one of our drivers for around US$50-55 each way here

If you are just starting your surfing experience, you will definitely want to hire an instructor at least for the initial few lessons. If you are serious about mastering the waves, you should take a week long camp where multiple hours of instruction each day will give you a good base to start your learning journey.

Surfing can be a pretty intense sport. Although the waves of Weligama are ideal for beginners, you should still know how to swim and be comfortable with vigorous exercise for a few hours at a time.

If you're a beginner, you can surf here all year round. More advanced surfers looking for a challenge should come here during the months of December to March when some of the bigger and more challenging waves are available.

Ideally you should plan for a week. However, if you are a bit short on time, please contact us and we will work with our partners to accommodate your schedule for a shorter stay.

The difference between the options is in the comfort level of accommodation and the intensity of the course. Some will have more lesson time than others. Please also look out for the level as some of the options are geared towards beginners, while others are for more advanced surfers.

🍴While spending some time in Weligama, make sure to visit a few of the best restaurants in town (and arguably in the country!). Head to Aloha Weligama for a mix of Western and Sri Lankan food. Aloha is run by a Russian transplant who really knows how to cook! Also check out Hangtime for good Western fare. 🐳Another great activity in this area (during the months of November to March) is whale watching. You can either arrange this with the surf shops, or book it here with our local partner who provides an ethical whale watching experience 🌴You may also be interested to take a day trip to the UNESCO Sinharaja Rainforest for some hiking, or to one of the nearby national parks such as Yala or Udawalawe National Park. Any of these activities will require a bit of driving (about 2-4 hours) and a day off from your surfing. But it's a totally worth it! You can either arrange a trip with the surf shops, or just book a car and a driver to take you there for maximum flexibility
