Boat Cruise in Cat Ba

The host, Chan, was a very friendly guy who made a lot of effort to give his guests a good experience. He took time to try and explain about the history and culture surrounding Lan Ha Bay. 

We were in a very small group with only 2 other people, which is quite rare for these kinds of tours. Chan took us to a number of very quiet spots away from the tour groups, including a lagoon and two beaches. We also finished the evening with a delicious seafood dinner in a local restaurant (included). 

The only drawbacks were that the description stated that depending on tide level, we would either hunt for crabs or fish. In the end, we did neither and this was disappointing and not particularly addressed (besides a comment on the weather meaning that less fishing happened that day). We also did a lot more kayaking than expected and probably more than we needed.

Overall, Chan was a very welcoming host and it was a fun and unique experience. Hopefully, if you do book, you get the weather to allow you to enjoy all the activities described.

The crew and the boat are great. So much wonderful food and the chef catered for my vegetarian wife, cooking all sorts of veggie wonders. The scenery is to die for and the cycling and walking trips were really good fun. Sun our guide is a top man. A good company to use.

The smaller vessel was perfect as it was a much more intimate experience. It was showing it’s age a bit in my opinion. The crew was friendly and helpful. The food was plentiful but a bit hit and miss when it came to my group of traveling companions. Definitely not as bustling as other cruises which was exactly what we were looking for. 

We had an awesome day exploring Lan Ha with Chans. Each tour is unique based on the weather, tides and season. This is as different from a standard boat cruise of the bay you can get, and we often felt like the only people around. Chans is a great guide, taking us to unknown places, and we felt like we got to know the island, the bay and the people much better.

Very peaceful, relaxed pace close to nature. You get to see things that you wouldn't see on a typical cruise trip. Chans was a very good guide, he showed us real beauty of bay and how Vietnamese fishermen live.

This was the perfect evening adventure! Our guide spoke excellent English so communication was easy. The food was awesome and they made sure there was something for everyone. There was plenty of down time to enjoy the scenic views and Oceanside location before we took off to see the plankton.

 Room for improvement, Bathroom and room are generally clean, however is you lift up the standard of cleanliness to details will give the experience perfect 5 stars.

I just took part in a fishing tour in Lan Ha Bay, starting from Cat Ba Island with Chans Tien Anh. It was really enjoyable. Chans is a fishing enthusiast who first took me to a kind of lake in the bay, nestled between karst rocks. At high tide, the bay fills the lake; at low tide, the lake drains back into the bay. Chans’s favorite fishing spot is right at the intersection. At high tide, you fish in the lake where the bay water rushes in. At low tide, you fish on the other side of the intersection, where the lake water flows out into the bay. This spot is teeming with small fish—we caught a good dozen. Chans also took me to the inner lake in search of bigger fish, but none showed up. According to him, fish are less active in winter (it was around 22–23°C), but when it’s warmer, it’s apparently crazy—he reels in a fish almost every cast.

Once the fishing session was over, Chans took me to a floating restaurant near the fishermen’s village, where they prepared a local specialty with our catch of the day—an incredibly delicious fish soup. All in all, it was a really pleasant activity.
