Friendly and helpful staff. Excellent Food. Great landscape. Highlight was swimming with turtles, mantas and of course the Komodo Dragons.

Pros: Amazing sights in Komodo National park - snorkelling in multiple spots, saw manta rays, dolphins, colourful fish. Tour guide and crew very experienced and friendly. Delicious home cooked food at every meal Cons: Condition of rooms can be improved - the doors kept getting stuck which can be dangerous for kids. Food choices for non-seafood and vegetarian passengers very limited.

This was a great time with amazing people! My family and I weren’t initially going to do a live aboard but I’m so happy we did. A tragic event and weather conditions did not allow us to do some of what we had planned but the crew did not disappoint. They had alternative activities planned and so much to do. Waking up to playing dolphins, coming face to face with Komodo dragons, swimming with countless Mantas, the most beautiful reef snorkeling I have ever seen, gorgeous Mountain View’s and topped with DELICIOUS meals throughout the day made for a perfect trip! Boat itself was very nice. Many activities onboard, cold AC in the rooms, deck views were gorgeous. Some other travelers on other boats did not get to see what we saw. Our guide, Obi, was knowledgeable about the currents and knew where to begin drift snorkeling so we could swim with mantas. Many other travelers were placed in one spot without the current and did not get the same experience we did. Only tip I would give to others is definitely bring bug spray, sun screen and maybe purchase durable shoes that can go in water and trekking. Beautiful hill tops at the beaches and our photographer “jack sparrow” took the most insane shots of our family on these tops. However, some were more slippery than others and hard to do without shoes if you’re not used to the terrain. We did it bare foot and definitely sustained a few Indonesian kisses from the rocks. Captain allowed us to jump from boat while anchored, as well paddle board and kayak. They also anchored at the best spot for the flying foxes. Can not express enough how friendly the crew is. A traveler on board had some dietary restrictions and they made meals specifically tailored for her needs with plenty of other options for everyone else. SO MUCH DELICIOUS FOOD. I am not a fan of seafood but I definitely tried it and enjoyed it. Best decision we made was to do a live aboard. I was very hesitant at first and was going to do just a day trip to specific locations but SOOO happy we chose the three day instead. Recommend them to everyone!! Also, if you have go pro bring it! If not, invest in water proof case for phone. You’ll want it!

Boat Cruise in Indonesia FAQs

What are some lesser-known boat cruise destinations in Indonesia that offer authentic local culture?

For travellers seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences, consider exploring the remote Raja Ampat islands, where traditional Papuan communities live in harmony with stunning coral reefs. Additionally, the Banda Islands are rich in history and local spice culture, offering a unique chance to combine cultural discovery with scenic photography. Opt for small boat charters or local guides to access these areas away from crowded tourist spots, and always respect local customs by engaging with community-led tours.

How can I best prepare my camera for boat cruises around Indonesia’s diverse coastal environments?

To capture Indonesia's stunning landscapes and vibrant local life, bring a weather-resistant camera and multiple lenses, including a wide-angle for wide vistas and a macro for intricate details. Use polarising filters to enhance colours underwater and reduce glare on the water. Consider bringing spare batteries and memory cards, as power supplies can be limited on small vessels. Also, protect your equipment from humidity and salt spray by storing it in waterproof cases when not in use, and review lighting conditions during different times of day for optimal shots.

Are there tour options suitable for immersive cultural experiences during Indonesian boat cruises?

Yes, seek out specialised boat tours that incorporate visits to local fishing villages, traditional ceremonies, and craft markets, often led by local guides who can provide authentic insights. Small boat expeditions around islands like Sumba or Flores allow travellers to participate in community-driven activities, such as weaving or fishing with locals. To deepen your experience, customise your itinerary with longer stays in villages to observe daily life and festivals, ensuring your travel is respectful and beneficial to host communities.

What safety tips should I keep in mind while enjoying boat cruises in Indonesia, especially in remote areas?

Prioritise safety by booking through reputable operators who follow local regulations and maintain well-equipped vessels. Always wear a life jacket when on deck, and communicate your plans clearly with your crew or guide. During off-the-beaten-path cruises, be prepared for sudden weather changes by carrying a lightweight waterproof jacket and secure personal belongings. It's also wise to inform someone on land about your itinerary, and carry a basic first aid kit. In remote areas, have a means of communication, such as a satellite phone or local SIM card with data, for emergencies.

How can I minimise my environmental impact while enjoying boat cruises across Indonesia’s fragile ecosystems?

Choose eco-conscious operators who follow sustainable practices like waste management, fuel efficiency, and supporting local conservation initiatives. Avoid touching or disturbing marine life, and adhere to guidelines for snorkelling and diving to protect coral reefs. Bring reusable water bottles and avoid single-use plastics to reduce marine pollution. Support local communities by purchasing handmade crafts and participating in culturally respectful activities. Finally, educate yourself about the ecological significance of the areas you visit, so you can travel responsibly and foster positive interactions with Indonesia’s diverse ecosystems.
