I’m still in awe of the most extraordinary trip of my life, and it’s hard to put into words just how incredible this experience was. I boarded the wonderful Phinisu boat called Gandiva with its wonderful crew on the 14th December for two nights... the exprience has left me absolutely on a high! I’m still talking about it with friends and family and dreaming about it… one month later!!! I want to express my heartfelt thanks for the beautiful hospitality and exceptional service I received from the amazing team: Faisal, Beko, Nandy, Rio, Ary, Ronald, Obi, and (Mr. Jack Sparrow) Gimbal! What a team! I was treated like a queen and felt like a goddess every single moment. We visited idyllic islands, snorkeled with majestic manta rays, sang Bob Marley songs, and even watched movies in the evenings. Everything was perfectly organized. The boys were attentive, kind, and always smiling. They took the time to chat with me, check in regularly, and ensure I was happy and having a wonderful experience. The chefs went above and beyond to ensure that every morsel of food was exquisite and bursting with flavor. The variety and abundance of dishes were extraordinary—I truly ate like a queen! Having a professional photographer on board was an extra special treat. He captured every magical moment with artistry and finesse, including stunning drone shots of the islands, the boat, and the stunning underwater shots, creating memories I will cherish forever. My cabin, the Arjuna Room, was clean, cozy, and welcoming. The large windows allowed me to relax while soaking in the picture-perfect landscapes and gorgeous ocean views. If you are thinking of booking, I would say—don’t hesitate! You are guaranteed to have the most unforgettable experience of your life. I highly recommend this extraordinary trip! Thank you again boys! I will be back!

This was my first experience with a live aboard boat and I hope future experiences will measure up. The boat itself was fantastic. Our room was very comfortable. There are many spaces around the boat to relax outdoors. The AC in the room was great when you just needed to cool down. The food was excellent from the welcome drinks after every excursion to the snacks and the meals. Lots of seafood, but also chicken for my daughter who isn't a seafood fan. The crew was always helpful and positive. Each day was full of excursions with a chance to hike and swim every day. The hikes were steep but manageable for all. The snorkeling was world class. The mantas were incredible. Of course, the Komodo dragons were fantastic as well. The trip photographer had a gopro, drone, and camera and took plenty of great photos and videos. As the family photographer, I don't often get pictures of myself. My photos aren't on the computer I'm writing on, so I won't be sharing with this review, but trust me, it was a great trip. I would like to mention the safety of the boat as well. Our captain was constantly monitoring weather. We changed plans one evening because where we were headed had bad weather. Instead, we waited until the morning to head to the area. The captain (as well as all of the crew) deserve a big round of applause (and don't forget your tip money).

Boat Cruise in Indonesia FAQs

What are some hidden boat cruise destinations in Indonesia that offer authentic local experiences?

For travellers seeking off-the-beaten-path boat cruise destinations in Indonesia, consider exploring the remote Raja Ampat Islands for untouched marine life and colourful corals, or venture to the Banda Islands for rich history and spice plantations. These areas are less touristy, offering a more authentic cultural immersion and stunning photographic opportunities of pristine beaches and traditional Papuan villages. Engaging local guides can enhance your experience, providing insights into indigenous traditions and ensuring respectful interactions.

What should I keep in mind when photographing on a boat cruise in Indonesia's remote islands?

When capturing stunning images on Indonesian boat cruises, arrive early or stay late to catch golden hour lighting that accentuates colours and textures. Use a polarising filter to reduce glare from water and enhance sky contrast. Protect your camera from salt spray by using waterproof covers or housings, and consider packing a wide-angle lens for sweeping seascapes and intimate shots of local villagers or marine life. Be respectful of local communities and always seek permission before photographing people.

Are there specific cultural customs or etiquette I should be aware of during boat cruises in Indonesia?

Yes, Indonesia is culturally diverse, and respecting local customs is essential. When visiting traditional coastal villages, dress modestly—covering shoulders and knees—and seek permission before taking photographs of locals, especially elders or ceremonial sites. During sailings, participate in local traditions if invited, and be mindful of religious practices. Using a respectful and humble attitude will enrich your experience and foster positive interactions with the local communities.

What are some eco-friendly tips for travellers on a boat cruise in Indonesia?

To minimise your environmental impact, opt for eco-certified operators that practise sustainable tourism. Avoid single-use plastics by carrying refillable water bottles and reusable bags. Be cautious with snorkelling and diving gear to prevent damaging fragile coral reefs. Support local conservation initiatives and refrain from collecting souvenirs from the marine environment. Always dispose of waste responsibly and participate in eco-conscious activities that promote the preservation of Indonesia's incredible biodiversity.

What is the best time of year to experience boat cruises in Indonesia for photography and local culture?

The optimal time for boat cruises in Indonesia, particularly for photography and cultural immersion, is during the dry season from May to September. During this period, the weather is typically calm and sunny, providing excellent lighting and calmer seas for capturing stunning seascapes and portraits. Additionally, many festivals take place during these months, offering vibrant cultural scenes. However, travelling in the shoulder months like April and October can offer fewer crowds and equally spectacular photographic opportunities.
