Sigiriya, an ancient palace and home to the iconic "Lion's Rock", was nominated as the 8th wonder of the world and is a UNESCO world heritage site. It's actually the most visited attraction in Sri Lanka because of the iconic Lion's Rock picture, and has the highest park fees!

Sigiriya is basically palace ruins with a great view. There are the summer palace ruins at the base and the winter palace ruins at the top of the rock. It's a historical site so you can get a ticket and wander around on your own, or you can take a guide who will be able to explain the cultural and historical significance of the place.

You can go anytime! Try to avoid rainy season from May to August as there's no shelter here.

Anyone who is able to climb. There are quite a lot of steps up - 1202 steps up and the same down, and the steps can be quite steep in parts. It is not an issue for someone of reasonable fitness but if you have any issues with mobility, we wouldn't recommend it.

- To avoid the crowds and the heat, go at 7am
- It takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours at a leisurely pace to cover it
- We would recommend taking a private guide to bring colour to one of the most significant cultural sites in Sri Lanka. We wouldn't recommend the park guides as the quality is hit or miss
