Review Body: We found this boat in the last minute on internet. When you type "liveaboard Komodo", you will find more than 15 boats - either luxury or budget, big or small, I will say a lot of choices. However, I have more than 2000 dives in my life and I tried quite a number of liveaboard in different countries, I am very sure that big boat, means having more than 12 guests, is definitely not my cup of tea. I tried also boat like having 12 guests which size is optimal but you will find a lot photo lovers on the boat. However, this time I told myself that I should try something different and hence I chose Duyung Baru because they took only 6 guests on the boat!!! I knew I will have different experience with them!
First of all, without any doubt, Komodo is one of the best dive sites in the world. . The owner of Duyung Baru, we all called him vovo, dives in Komodo for more than 20 years. Duyung Baru was the first liveaboard in Komodo. He knows Komodo by heart. During the trip, he brought us to all sites, even secret one…We saw Manta 4 times , sharks almost every day…
Duyung Baru is like you rent your own boat and dive with the dive master. On other boats, since you have more number of guests, you need to dive with certain schedule and procedure. On this boat, you can decide what you want to do between the guests. Vovo will ask you "when do you want for your next dive?" "where do you want to dive?". The atmosphere is so free that it is like diving with your friends on a chartered boat!
Vovo's wife, Yanni, is our angel! She prepared everything on the boat out of diving (this is not totally true because sometimes she even prepared the bottles and dried your BCD!). She made all the meals on the boat. Bread was freshly made by her every day. If you like Nasi Goreng, yes, she can do it; if you like Japanese, yes she can also do it; if you like dim sum, yes she can also do it!!! She made the best satay I have ever tasted!! She is the superwoman and took care of her guests so well. We have nothing to add!
I am sure I will come back to dive with them. The only problem is whether vovo will be available. He will have one more boat for free diving very soon. I really hope that I could dive with him again!

Review Body: Our week aboard the Duyung Bari was an incredible experience. It felt like we did a homestay with Yani, who treated and accepted us as family from the moment we connected. Her warmth and generosity is unparalleled. She literally gave me the shirt off her back when I asked if they sold t-shirts! She woke before dawn every day to bake delicious bread, Indonesian specialities and yummy desserts (including a birthday cake for one of our fellow guests). This is not a boat for weight watchers - you will return home with extra baggage.
As for the diving, our guide, Nick, did a fantastic job of managing currents and tides to keep us safe and diving within our abilities. He choose the best dive sites with a mix of popular destinations and those lesser known. We saw heaps of reef sharks, manta rays, turtles and spotted more rare specimens including frogfish, octopus, cuttlefish, and brightly colored nudibranches. The diving was challenging for me, as it was my first time using a reef hook and diving with strong currents, but I felt safe and improved my skills with Nick. Be sure to bring mask, fins, computer. They’ve got the rest if you dont want to haul it there. They have nitrox too.
The rest of the crew was equally exceptional. Hendri, the speedboat driver, scooped us up no matter where we popped up from our dive. Saptu kept the boat and kitchen spotless and tidy. Meraj captained with ease and with a smile.
This is a small boat, with 3 passenger cabins. They are cozy yet well designed and supremely comfortable, with en suites and hot showers. The bed is restful and Yani sewed all the bedding by hand.
This was one of the most memorable vacations my partner and I have taken. Every aspect of the trip was curated with love and careful attention. I will look back to this wonderful cruise with fond memories and with with warmth towards the crew.

Review Body: Summary:
This boat is based in Bira, S. Sulawesi (access via Makkasar) and transitions to Komodo and Wakatobi for their seasons, by varied routes. Personally, I love transition trips and have done two (planning another in November). Joining this boat at either key location ensures the best diving possible there!
Before writing this review, I visited again the website to check how it presented some of my experiences. It is accurate, as far as it goes. But what is lacking on the website is the magic of actually being escounsed on Duyung Baru! It really is a special experience, when compared to most liveaboards.
At this price range, one wants something backpackers don't get and other similarly priced liveaboards don't offer. These are the boat construction, layout and the pairing of Yani and Volvo as hosts. Upon boarding you immediately have the feeling of openness and family. Magic!
The whole boat, in and out, is beautiful Indonesian timber, with a main deck lounge and upper deck sun area. The galley is modern and fully equiped. The dining area spacious for a group of 6, plus the hosts (who always dined with the guests). The cabins are beautifull and not cramped, with separate shower and toilet. All very comfortable and exclusive.
It is difficult to convey what makes this boat feel different from other liveaboards I have experienced. The beauty and functionality of the boat is certainly a factor. But I think the special feeling is a result of the hosts.
Likes:
- a beautiful, well laid-out and organized liveaboard dive boat
- great (low fat) food, with fresh breads daily
- laid back ambiance, small group of divers
- experienced crew and owner / dive-guide
- gets to, and executes dives, at great locations
Yikes:
- not the cheapest liveaboard experience
- beers and Nitrox chargeable extras
Tips:
- go for it!

Review Body: We were guests on Duyung Baru for 9 days. While "guest" is not the right word. Yani and Vovo gave us the feeling to be part of something "special", a bit like family, from the very first moment on. Vovo guided us on our dive trips. He knows how and when to dive every spot the best way. And of course, we saw mantas. But it's not only mantas, which makes Komodo worth a dive trip, There are so many really beautiful places with sharks, napoleons, turtles, big schools of fish and even snails for the macro fans. We took tons of pics.
Vovos indonesian wife Yani is the soul of the Duyung Baru. In the morning, after the first dive, we started with a "german" breakfast, which means fresh baked bread and brezels, eggs different style, cheese, marmelade, pancakes and and... During the day we had fresh indonesian soups, snacks like coconut, baked banana and a fresh baked cake. Yes, a cake - sometimes still warm from the oven. And in the evening we completed a perfect diving day with a fresh cooked indonesian meal. Fresh BBQ fish, saté, noodles, vegetables salads and everything you can think of. Five star kitchen.
The ship is a nice pinisi, made of wood. The cabins where spacious with separated shower, WC and AC. There are three guest cabins with two beds each.
We visitied the Komodo dragons one day. It was a nice trip but you should not expect too much. We saw a group of them lying around at the ranger station right at the start of our trail and that was it. No more dragons during the rest of our trail. Ok, we had choosen the short trail, maybe we'd have had more luck during a longer trail.
But that could NOT belittle our impression of a wonderful time on the Duyung Baru. Thank you very much Vovo and Yani for letting us be part of your world for a (too) short time. We'll come back.

Review Body: My girlfriend and I had the best time on the Duying Bary, and we would highly recommend! Completely outstanding!
The Duyung Baru boat had great accommodation - air conditioning, comfort, and on the deck, we could relax and have ample room in getting around. The boat was purposely built for scuba diving, and didn't feel crowded in the slightest. The food was spectacular - fresh and plentiful food encouraged overeating, argh!
Scuba diving around Komodo was awesome. A few of the dive sites are world class, and had everything - colour, excellent visibility, corals galore, huge abundancy of marine life, sharks, turtles, lionfish, macro! We also saw a few manta rays that were frolicking around us.
Crews were great, and again, couldn't ask for anything more. Yani, resident chef/captain, went beyond the call of duty in getting up early to ensure we had great breakfasts (waking up to fresh bread), and Indonesian crews were always helpful. We had scuba diving guide Vovo, and his passion was very infectious. We had a lot of joking around with him, and allowed us to scuba dive within our limits whilst still being support when we needed him. As a bonus, he taught us freediving whilst on board, and was a great alternative skill.
We booked this trip primarily as the dates lined up for our availability, however we realised during the trip how lucky we were! There are only six places for divers, which means dive sites were never overcrowded, but still allowed us to get along with one another and point things out when something was cool.
Komodo scuba diving itself was fantastic, day trips trekking up island mountains and seeing komodo dragons, all while getting spoilt eating and diving - what more to love?!

Review Body: I had the great pleasure from 10/15-23 / 2016 to join one of the owner's, Yani Korth on her Phinisi schooner, Duyung Baru (25 meters ) on a live aboard in the Komoto Island region. She and her crew of 4 gave me and 5 other divers a trip full of memories. They all worked well as a team with warmth, consideration for special needs, and each with expertise. Bon Appetite (Enak) best describes the food. Her special fresh baked breads, grilled seafood, various local vegetables, and desserts never ceased to amaze our palettes. I was able to join her in the kitchen for a few lessons in regional food. She also found time for a to die for massage.
Dive Master, Simone, gave thorough briefings as well as adept at reading the currents. The diving was challenging so experience a necessity. The waters were world class with sightings of macro and palagic. The Chauldren also known as the "Shotgun" will test your skills and courage! My goddess, Simone, guided me through with a helping hand! Hendrick, the skiff operator, had a smile painted on his face which will save me from the 1000 words I could use to describe this experience. Andi never tired of my special requests due to diet and age(67). Captain Merajap, kept our course prompt and without incident. Professionalism, humor, socializing , and family warmth best describes my experience . We also had a memorable time at Rinca checking out the Komoto dragons and a panoramic view for a Kodak moment. My new dive friends from Austria were part of the frosting on the cake. Their expertise, humor, warmth and friendship represented the peace I find throughout my worldly travels.

Review Body: I crashed the trip for filling in an empty spot with my husband and it was the best decision i made that month! The boat is stunning, spanking clean, and spacious. I have been in boats in Komodo and most of them are never this clean. 5 star for cleanliness!!! The crew are amazingly nice especially Vovo and his wife Yani who is also the chef onboard. Her food was amazing with non stop freshly baked cakes and bread everyday! I repeat. Fresh bread everyday! She wakes up super early in the morning to bake so you will smell that good aroma once u step outta your room. She even made oxtail soup on our trip!
We stayed in the double room with ensuite shower. The room is spacious enough for us two and our big luggages. A lot of compartments which are necessary considering divers always bring lotsa stuff. The air con and hot shower works perfect.
At night we hangout on the top deck where there are sunbeds and gaze to the stars. Vovo also shut off the genzet on request to see the stars better. Thanks for doing this! It was an amazing night with The Milky Way!
The dives: impeccably amazing! I did my first crazy drift dive and it was THE best dive ever!!!! I felt like i was in Mission Impossible movie. Thanks to Vovo for knowing where to go. I would love to do it again.
We also made time to visit the dragons in Rinca island. Yani hiked with us and showed us very beautiful view over this island.
I would like to recommend this boat to my friends and colleagues who plan to go to Komodo.
Thank you Vovo, Yani, Matt and Duyung Baru crew!

Review Body: Gosh, where do you start? Firstly, a look below the deck reveals a hold that is neat, well organized, and totally functional. Above, the galley and dining room are well designed. The food prepared by Yani, one of the owners is beyond exllent. Every meal is a culinary delight;breakfast, lunch and dinner are prepared with care and attention to presentation. Deckspace is also roomy and function. There are shaded areas and sundecks,if one cares to work on their tan. Ah yes, and the diving. Briefings are thorough and accurate with detailed drawings and explanations, including contingency plans. If you REALLY want to dive Komodo, you must be prepared to put forth some effort. The diving is exilerating and challenging, so come prepared to use all your skills. You willnot be dissapointed. In fact, you will come away a better, more competent diver. However, what really sets Duyung Baru apart from the rest are the friendships you will develop, and the camaraderie that exists between the other divers, the crew, and the owners. It is truly an intimate experience with only 6 divers and 6 crew. After my trip I had 11 new friends, I will remember for a long time. The diving, both macro and palagic, was world class. Remember, in this world, no effort, no reward. If you put inthe effort, you will be rewarded with both friendship and an unforgettable scuba diving experience. Nuff said.

Review Body: I went with my wife with the Duyung Baru on a liveaboard in July 2016 around Komodo. We stayed 5 nights / 6 days. The most important element when deciding on a boat is the accommodation. Coming from a hospitality background myself this is key so based on the pictures I really liked the cabin when I was browsing the internet so I decided to book this boat. When we arrived on the boat we immediately noticed the boat was extremely well maintained and when I entered the cabin I could not have been more happy...I was in awe. Wow, what a nice cabin with nice double bed, very comfortable shower and toilet. I really liked the toilet and shower in the cabin were separated. All extremely comfortable and 5 star. We slept like roses. The second important element is food and again here we were extremely satisfied with the quality of the food. Delicious all the way. My favorite was the fresh grilled fish, catched from the boat. A dream come true. Last but not least the diving was great and safe. Strong currents but big fun! I recommend to bring some bottles of wine to drink under the stars before going to bed. We did this and shared it with the other guest. This was the cherry on the cake. We will 100 % come back. Thank you so much!

Review Body: The owner, Vovo is very experienced in Komodo islands, he is a truly Komodo Pro, he knows every stone of Komodo underwater. Our trip departured just on the time of new moon, he monitoring the tide and current before every dive, make sure the site we go is fun and most important safety. He will find the best site we could go with best condition, and not crowded at all. We enjoyed the amazing and tailored diving very much because of his efforts.
Vovo's wife, Yani, the captain and the chef, she wake up on 4:00am every morning to bake the fresh bread, I will never forget the fresh German Prezels she made, is the one of the best I've tasted.
Me and the other two are may the first group of Chinese guests of Vovo's liveaboard, hope will have more divers know them and dive with them.

Review Body: Can't tell you how excited we were to come across the manta ray cleaning station. We'd heard about it and managed to convey the message to the crew what we were after so they made it a priority to see if we could make it there considering the weather.
Without warning, we were given the nod that we were there and suddenly we had our snorkel and masks on, jumping overboard and snorkelling along the top to see the manta rays.
Some of them were 3 metres across and without sound, glided through the water with a sense of ease and freedom. It took my breath away. I have never felt so close to nature as I did than for that half hour snorkelling through the ocean.
It was the peace and tranquility. The simplicity of it all. The mantas were not afraid of us although I was a wee bit hesitant with them. We were told to give them lots of space which we did and they would glide right up next to us and then roll and turn showing us their underbelly. Awesome. Just awesome.
Even better is that this memory has stuck with my kids. It's one of their highlights and they appreciate what nature has to offer and how we need to protect it.

Review Body: Had been on a 7d/6n cruise through Komodo National Park for scuba diving. Although we were fully booked, the atmosphere was still very family like as the Duyung Baru only takes a maximum of six guests at a time. The experienced and proactive dive masters, Vovo and Matt, and crew were always able to listen, help and interact on a very personal level. Also, Yani - the fabulous and lovely chef on board - did her magic with Indonesian food at its finest.
It was an unforgettable trip as Komodo is also an incredible scuba dive destination. With good flexibility in reacting to nature's will, such as currents and visibility conditions, we had very good dives with a lot of turtles, reef sharks and loads of Mantas. The flexibility in choosing dive sites depending on conditions suited everybody's interests and skills.
On top of the scuba diving, we were allowed to borrow the speed boat for trekking on islands and shoot the stars and milky way in this exceptional landscape of Indonesia.
Only downside: It's hard to leave Komodo, the Duyung Baru, and people at the end of the trip. Looking forward to come back some day!

Review Body: Absolutely fabulous. One of the best live-a-boards that we have ever stayed on. The traditional wooden yacht is beautiful & extremely comfortable. With just three double cabins it's also very personalized. Yannie & her crew were always very attentive, friendly & knowledgable.
Yannie is an incredible cook, each meal is freshly prepared & home cooked. (Making her own bread & fresh noodles amongst many things. There is a mix of Indonesian & Western dishes, always nicely presented & always plenty for everyone.
We were diving in the Komodo sea & we were not disappointed, the diving there really is spectacular, lots of fish & beautiful corals & good visibility. The diving can be challenging at times but we always felt very safe in the hands of our dive masters/guides, who always gave very detailed briefings & instructions for safety. We prefer to dive with nitrox & pre-requested it when we made the booking. In between dives there is plenty of time to rest & relax on the yacht, Sun or shade there is plenty of both provided.
From our experience we highly recommend this live-a-board.

Review Body: One of the best, if not THE BEST, liveaboard trip we have ever had (and we had taken many, including the luxury ones)! We are usually looking for deep dives, strong currents, many fish (the bigger the better:)), not many other divers and good food. Duyung Baru exceeded our expectations in all those areas!!! Diving is indeed quite hard considering the strong currents, but Vovo knows how to dive currents and takes safety very seriously (we are real "safety sausage experts" after this trip)! The boat itself is very comfortable - nice cabins with proper matrasses and separate toilet/shower rooms, plenty of space for relaxation both in sun and shadow. And the last but definetely not the least is Yani's hospitality and food! She is the heart and soul of the boat and her food is soooooo tasty and always fresh!!!! I cannot recomment Duyung Baru more! We will be back!

Review Body: Everything about this liveaboard dive trip exceeded my expectations, especially the four most important things - the crew, the diving, the food, and the boat!
The crew, headed up by owners Vovo and Yani keep everything, including everyone's dive gear, the mothership, and dive speedboat, performing safely and smoothly.
Vovo's extensive experience in the Komodos ensures memorable diving among big fish in strong current for reasonably skilled divers. Big sharks, mantas, bumpheads, groupers, giant trevalley, and more will amaze you on every dive.
The boat is an Indonesian beauty, with accomodations that are modern, clean, and comfortable.
The food was fantastic and plentiful featuring Yani's Indonesian inspired dishes as well as her fresh baked breads and rolls.
I'm looking forward to another adventure on the Duyung Baru in the near future.

Review Body: Spent a week diving awesome Komodo sites (third LOB trip to Komodo and our favorite!!). Slept like a baby, our cabin is beautifully finished and had everything you need. The bed was so comfortable, and good AC too! Yani makes delicious food--it is home-cooked healthy and tasty! It is yummy local cuisine! I couldn't resist the fresh daily bread, local fruit and charcoal BBQ!! I strongly recommend the small group LOB. (I have done many large-group LOB and the experience is more cookie cutter). With a small group, we got around quicker and were able to tailor our diving to please everyone. Flexibility reigns! The entire experience is much more personalized and rewarding, and I strongly recommend you travel on Duyung Baru if you want to get the most out of your trip to Komodo.

Review Body: I went on a liveaboard on the Duyong about a year ago with a friend. We are both highly experienced divers and we were looking for something that catered to our level. We were certainly not disappointed. The diving in Komodo is just beautiful! I recommend to everyone to go and dive there at some point in your life. The boat is a really beautiful Phinisi and very comfortable, the food was as incredible as the diving, the most amazing sashimi and seaweed salad made by Yanni (the loveliest lady you could ever meet) The staff in general were all very pleasant. Having been on many liveaboards before this one, everything went beyond my expectations. I do plan on a return visit...Soon hopefully!

Review Body: We just completed a fantastic 7d/6n cruise in the Komodo National Park on board the Duyung Baru liveaboard. We did 3 or 4 dives a day in world famous dive sites such as Batu Bolong and Castle Rock with manta rays, turtles, sharks and giant trevallies, saw Komodo dragons in Rinca, climbed on top Gili Lawa Darat, learned the basics of free diving (reached 17 metres!), practised sunset yoga and enjoyed amazing indonesian food and home-made baking by lovely Yani. Vovo, Yani, Matt and the crew took such a good care of us with flexible itiniaries and listening to our dive preferences. Boat itself was great: aircon, sundeck, warm showers and only six guests in total. Warmly recommended!

Review Body: Our experience was fantastic. Being on a boat for only 6 guests/divers has a LOT of benefits. First, the space in the cabins is way more than you'd expect. The 3 cabins are beautiful with separate toiler and shower. The mattresses are so comfy and the AC is quite and makes for a great night's sleep. Yani's cooking was spectacular. You get fresh bread baked daily for breakfast, charcoal BBQ and homemade ice-cream on the boat! The food was always delicious and plenty. Having a small group aso means the diving can be tailored to accommodate everyone's expectations. If you're planning on going to Komodo, this is the way to go!

Meet your host
German-born Korth Vovo arrived in Bali in the way back 1993. As a young man, he initially set out to enjoy the uncrowded, world-class surf breaks of Indonesia. Later, he owned a beachwear company while still managing to find time for his passion, surfing. Eventually, he decided to sell his small export company which enabled him to afford his very first boat in 1998 - It was an old Indonesian Phinisi sailboat named Duyung (which means Mermaid). Purchased with the intention of discovering new surf breaks that were only accessible by boat. It quickly became apparent however that the boat's engine was just too small and coming into close proximity of these breaks was just too dangerous. It was at this point that Vovo was re-introduced to Scuba diving. Vovo and his crew sailed the Indonesian archipelago exploring and scuba diving in uncharted territory for the next 3 years. In this time Vovo met his soon to be wife- Yani. The two formed a lifelong relationship and complimented each other perfectly. They held a common goal, to enjoy their lives and to share their joy with their friends and their guests aboard the liveaboard Duyung. There are not many people alive today who have more knowledge of the dive sites and waters of Komodo than Vovo and his crew.
