Review Body: My family of 5 did the Tri Hita Karana experience and it was the highlight of our trip! The whole experience was perfect. We learnt the Balinese way of life - spiritual and cultural beliefs and values. There was so much to learn and Wayan (the guide and founder) was really accommodating and answered our curiosities. The adults and kids were equally engaged throughout the morning immersive experience. We went to Wayan’s village, farms and fireflies lab, and had a great traditional farm to table lunch. We were very much inspired by Wayan’s passion for fireflies and the biodiversity he aims to achieve. This was definitely an experience that’s off the beaten path, and so glad that I chanced upon it.

Review Body: Probably the nicest family you’ll meet in Bali. They were extremely accommodating to my mother and very hospitable overall. We were taught about Balinese Hinduism, local farming, and their conservation efforts of fireflies. The tour ended at their beautiful campground where we briefly participated in making our lunch. There’s a lot of food to try, so come hungry! I highly recommend if you want to learn more Bali’s culture or if you just want to meet a beautiful family.

Review Body: Wayan, his family and dedicated team of researchers gave us an excellent insight into fireflies in Taro, including sound science, and aspects of spirituality, people-nature connection and and history. The home, food, people and science were all amazing to experience.
The evening was a well thought out but concise event that showcased everything they stood for - a small group of people that care for their land, and want to share their experience with all who are interested. The best part were the two researchers from the local university who took the time to explain the life cycle of fireflies, walked us through their excellent laboratory set up, answered all the questions we bombarded them with with accuracy, thought and complete knowledge. As a scientist myself, I came away feeling very educated and with a thorough understanding of what they are aiming to achieve here. The work they do here has immense potential, laying the groundwork for tropical firefly research and conservation globally.
At the end of the day we got to see the fireflies twinkling in their lab and in the field nearby, and that was so magical to witness.
Wayan is earnest, genuine, thoughtful and articulate. He took us on a walk through the village explaining uses of native plants that was extremely interesting to learn. Understanding his reasons behind beginning the firefly initiative are simple but so important. Hopefully, him or more people like him are able to increase small scale conservation efforts across Bali, Indonesia and further. Apart from the fireflies, all the other small things their family does is also something that should be encouraged to continue, such as raising native bees, extracting their own coconut oil/milk, and their own palm sugar.
Lastly, we loved the food in Indonesia already but the food prepared with love and care by Wayan's sister topped our list. It was healthy, fulfilling and delicious. We helped a bit, but she did most of it! They are also considerate of dietary needs and preferences. We love chilli, so they made a separate batch of sambal with lots of chilli just for us! The coconut milk/banana/palm sugar dessert was the highlight for us.
We have so much more we could say about this entire experience but cannot fit in a little review. It was the best part of our visit to Bali. This place and project is truly a labour of love and care, and if you get a chance to go see this place, we would highly recommend it.

Review Body: After reading about some of the unethical tourist activities in Bali, I was looking for something a bit more authentic and meaningful. That's how I came across Seek Sophie and the Firefly Safari with a Conservationist. It sounded like a great fit for our family – meeting locals, visiting a working farm, enjoying local food, learning about fireflies, and something our 4-year-old would enjoy too.
The team sent clear directions beforehand, which was helpful as the farm is down a narrow, winding road. Our first driver managed it fine, but our second wasn't quite so keen! Thankfully, we got a lift on scooters to the entrance, which our son thought was fantastic.
The experience felt very genuine from the moment we arrived. It was a real family-run farm, and everyone seemed involved. We met the animals, looked around the fruit trees, and learnt about the farm. As we grow a lot of our own fruit and vegetables in Australia, we found this particularly interesting.
Wayan was a wonderful host and even arranged for his 5-year-old son to join us. Despite not speaking the same language, the two kids became instant friends and spent the evening running around together. It was lovely to watch.
Learning about the firefly conservation project was fascinating. You can tell Wayan is passionate about what he is doing through the "Bring Back the Light" project and helping local farmers adopt more sustainable practices. His enthusiasm is very contagious.
Dinner was another highlight. Wayan's aunt prepared a delicious meal and there was so much food. Definitely don't eat before you come! Sitting outside under the trees with the lights dimmed created a really special atmosphere.
Then came the fireflies. There weren't many wild ones around, which is exactly why the conservation work is so important, but we were able to see some in the rice fields and also release a number that had been raised as part of the project. Watching them light up in the dark was magical. I could have sat there all night.
This was one of the most memorable experiences of our week in Bali. It wasn't flashy or touristy – just a genuine evening with a local family doing something positive for their community and environment.
A real highlight of our trip. We wish Wayan and his family every success with the project.

Review Body: What an amazing magical night.
We arrived there around 5 pm when the sky started to change into a beautiful yellow pink which turn to black colour. Wayan greeted us and within minutes we were served a nice warm tea with the most delicious Balinese sweet rice cake.
Yes, even the tea tasted better than I have yet tasted here.
He then took us to the lab where he explained the circle of life of the fireflies and how delicate and special they are. It takes (correct me if I’m wrong) about 1,5-2 years to become a firefly just to live 22 days. The best 22 days of their lives that is. He must have told me, but I was so impressed by it all that I now have forgotten how much fireflies he has in the lab in all stages. During the 1,5 years he managed to release only 29 fireflies into their habitat which is on the rice field behind the lab. The amount must go higher but this takes time and more knowledge behind their needs.
He then took us walking into their habitat, through the rice field and “jungle” back to the beginning where the kitchen area also was.
There was 2 other families also in our group and what felt as 1 big family we prepared our dinner together. This was just lovely.
The night fell and some of the dishes needed to be on the traditional fire pit longer and in that period of time we were heading to see the fireflies in their natural habitat on the rice field.
This was the moment we all been waiting for and it was the most magical moments of my
Life. The male fireflies flew high in the trees, the females flew just above the smallest tree and low on the rice fields. Just signing and communicating with each other. Some brighter than others.
I can tell you that the dinner and dessert after was the most authentic, pure, delicious Balinese dinner we had so far.
Thank you so much for this magical and learning experience Wayan and family.

Review Body: A Soulful Firefly Encounter — A Hidden Gem with Heart
I stumbled upon this firefly tour on Seek Sophie — though in truth, nothing is ever by chance. This was an experience that arrived exactly when it was meant to.
Hosted by Pak Wayan and his family, this tour is more than just an activity — it’s a heart-opening glimpse into the spirit of Bali. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with a delicious snack cooked over a traditional firewood stove, and stories that moved the soul.
Pak Wayan shared his calling: to protect the fireflies — those glowing creatures we rarely see anymore. Like bees, fireflies are quietly disappearing. In over four decades of life, I had never seen one. That realization was quietly heartbreaking. Fireflies are nature’s litmus test — their presence signals clean water, clean air, and balanced ecosystems.
Pak Wayan has dedicated his land to researching, rehabilitating, and releasing fireflies back into the wild. Yes, you’ll see them. Yes, you’ll even release them — but please, leave your Disney expectations at the door. What you’ll witness is real magic, not movie magic. And it’s far more meaningful.
We helped prepare dinner, shared stories, and felt the love in every bite. The food was humble but deeply nourishing — soul food in every sense.
And then there’s Desa Taro — the village that cradles this entire experience. It feels like a whisper from old Bali. The land hums with stillness, the air is pristine, and the spirits feel present, watching kindly as you walk with respect.
Thank you, Seek Sophie, for championing experiences like this — where purpose meets presence, and travelers connect not just with places, but with people and meaning.
If you crave more than selfies and sunsets, go here. It’s unforgettable.
Oh!!! Make sure you bring a light sweater or light jacket. It gets cold!!

Review Body: My evening here was one of the highlights of my time in Ubud. The experience broadly comprises a sharing of Bli Wayan and Novi’s efforts to study the fireflies, conservation works; a visit to their little research lab, a short walk around the site to their neighbours and fields; helping out in the kitchen to make dinner and witnessing the magical spectacle of the fireflies when it’s dark. I think what makes this experience so special is really hearing Wayan and Novi’s passion and being inspired by their sheer gumption in turning an idea into reality. They were really open in sharing their own personal experiences and there was so much heart they have poured into this singular effort. These are a bunch of a really earnest and sincere people trying to do their best.
I’ve not seen fireflies before and it really is something special to see them glow in the lab and also some out on the rice fields. Just to manage expectations: most of the fireflies that we saw that night were in the lab in their containers. We did see some fireflies out in the rice fields but it was really just a small handful as it was raining earlier that day.
The food was also really GOOD! My friend and I were hardly helpful in the kitchen so less of us cooking then us just admiring Tati (hope I got her name right) at work and chatting with her and the team. The food tasted like home cooked food which was really nice and inviting. Food was cooked in the traditional Balinese style. It was truly quite a spread.
All in all - highly recommended! They have only just started offering this experience to tourists for a few months. So don’t come here expecting a polished and professional tour but I don’t think that is also their intent.
Come for the fireflies, stay for the people.

Review Body: A Place Where Light Returns — Truly Magical.
There are places you visit, and there are places that visit you—that stay in your heart long after you’ve left. Rumah Konservasi Kunang-Kunang (Bring Back the Light) is one of those rare places.
From the moment I arrived, Wayan and his beautiful family welcomed me like an old friend—with warm smiles, open hearts, and a home-cooked dinner that felt like a blessing. I met the whole family—each one kind, generous, and deeply connected to the land and its spirit.
This is more than a farm. It’s a living, breathing story of hope, healing, and regeneration. Two gentle, passionate scientists shared the magic behind their work—restoring the firefly population, supporting local farmers, and protecting the ecosystem with quiet devotion. You don’t just learn here—you feel. You have this amazing opportunity to be a part of something greater than yourself.
The most unforgettable moment? Releasing a firefly back into the wild. I named her Rosetta, after my grandmother. As she flew away, lighting up the night, Wagan smiled and said, “We haven’t seen this many fireflies in a long time.” Maybe it was her spirit. I like to believe it was.
If you’re in Bali, don’t just pass through. Come here. Be part of something luminous, something real. Let your heart light up—just like the fireflies. I left with sharing warm hugs and my heart full of joy and gratitude, and I’m already looking forward to returning on my next visit to Bali. Thank you, Rumah Konservasi Kunang-Kunang for such a meaningful and unforgettable experience.

Review Body: Magical Firefly Safari Experience
I recently had the incredible opportunity to participate in a firefly safari that not only showcased the beauty of these enchanting creatures but also emphasized the importance of sustainability and conservation. The entire experience was educational and engaging, starting with a fascinating explanation about fireflies, their habitat, and their life cycle.
One of the highlights was visiting the laboratory where we got to observe fireflies in various stages of their life. This interactive experience deepened my appreciation for these amazing insects and highlighted the urgent need to protect them as their populations are declining.
We also had the chance to explore an organic farm, where the staff passionately explained how agriculture practices and pesticides, along with light pollution, affect firefly populations. It was eye-opening to see the connections between our food choices and environmental health.
The day culminated in a delightful cooking class where we prepared local dishes using fresh ingredients from the farm. Finally, we ventured out into nature to witness fireflies in their natural habitat—a truly magical sight!
Throughout the entire experience, the staff was exceptionally kind and knowledgeable. Their dedication to protecting fireflies was evident and made our visit even more special. We left feeling incredibly satisfied and grateful for such a unique experience. I highly recommend this safari to anyone interested in nature, sustainability, or simply looking for an unforgettable adventure!

Review Body: I went to the Firefly conservation with my group. And it was way beyond our expectations. Wayan and his family and team were very welcoming and thoughtful. We were walking from the main road to the camp area in the jungle, as our van driver wasn't sure if the van can go through. Wayan met us halfway. While the walk isn't far, one of our group had to use the toilet. Wayan actually got his staff to motorbike out to pick up my friend, so that he can reach the camp faster. Not only that, Wayan found my van driver and helped to direct him into the camp itself.
Within the camp, while it was spartan, the staff were really passionate on conserving the fireflies. They took a lot of time and effort to show us the various stages and life cycles of the fireflies. And we also walked through a village, seeing their daily lives.
The fun part was also preparing our dinner, using the ingredients that were from the farms in the villages. The food we were served were interesting and absolutely delicious. And rest assured that it was handled well with gloves, so no one had any issues with Bali Belly. There was even dessert!
And of course the highlight of the trip was to see the fire flies glow during nightfall. While not many, you will also be rewarded with the many stars in the sky, since there is no light pollution. But with Wayan and his team's effort, I believe they will very soon be successful and there will be many more fireflies.
Would definitely recommend this as a very unique experience

Review Body: I genuinely cannot imagine a more fulfilling and wholesome experience in Bali. You get the best of so many things—nature, family, food, community, science. You will drive through the lush jungle to get here and are welcomed by towering trees that protect the family’s kitchen and dining areas. You immediately feel SO connected to the beauty of nature. Wayan and his entire family were so welcoming and lovely, they truly made the experience what it is and you will be able to see firsthand how living by their Tri Hita Karana philosophy makes them such wonderful and kind people who are so easy to connect with. The dinner that they make for you—their traditional Balinese dish—is SO yummy! Every single thing we cooked in their unique and amazing outdoor kitchen was fantastic! It is so obvious that Wayan’s mission is such a passion project and it was so fun seeing and learning about it and what the fireflies mean in Balinese culture. Absolutely fascinating. The walk around the farm with Wayan’s son was so fun! He was so knowledgeable in everything from the plants and their medicinal benefits, the fireflies, etc, and we had a lot of good laughs and talked about a dynamic range of topics. The property, this family, and this mission is indescribably beautiful and I left not only with a full heart, but a lot of hope and optimism for seeing such important and good work being done around the world. I cannot recommend this enough for an authentic and true Balinese experience.

Review Body: If you’re looking for an activity for the evening/night after a flight, look no further. You will be treated to a delectable full course dinner (appetizer, black coffee/tea/coconut water, mains, dessert) cooked on the spot by Wayan’s sister. We did not have time for lunch and this meal really left us full and contented. We slept well after. The spinach chips may look like ordinary fried food, but it’s my first time eating such fresh fried spinach paired with self made tomato sauce, loved it! Pictures don’t do it justice, you will have to taste it!
Seeing the fireflies fly and blink were left to be experienced near the end before dessert as night falls. How many fireflies you get to see flying around will depend on your luck, don’t expect too much. Wayan and his family/colleagues shared a lot of their passion and love for Mother Nature. Thank you all for what you do!
To others: Please cater in about 2+hrs from landing time for any flight delays, to clear customs and to find your driver pick-up point. Also, do cater in additional time for traffic as they are mostly single lanes with high traffic. We were late but Wayan and his family/colleagues kindly waited for us. However, if they had more guests for that day, it might be disruptive for them.
Thank you Wayan, his son & sister & the lab staff for hosting us, we wish all of you the very best!

Review Body: I had the most fantastic time on this experience, I cannot recommend it enough. It was the highlight of my trip to Bali. As a scientist with a special interest in entomology, I was looking for a more meaningful experience away from the usual tourist traps. I feel like all my prayers were answered with Bring Back the Light. The scientists were passionate and knowledgeable, especially Novi who spoke excellent English. I had some great conversations with her, including sharing insect photos on our phones (it’s not often I find someone as excited about insects as I am!). The experience included a tour of the lab, where I learnt about the firefly breeding program and got to see the larvae and eggs under a microscope, followed by a tour of the organic farm, including a traditional farmers home, and then an amazing authentic Balinese cooking experience. The food was delicious and I was made to feel so welcome. The evening was topped off by watching the fireflies over the rice paddies after dark, followed by a Balinese dessert. This tour is suitable for anyone looking for a magical experience. It’s great value for money as there many different aspects included. I stayed at nearby Nang Taro Homestay, which was also fantastic and included a short trek to a waterfall. I am so happy I booked onto this.

Review Body: Meeting Wayan and his wonderful family was a truly fantastic experience. We were welcomed with such openness and warmth that we felt at home immediately. We were handed drinks and snacks right away, and learned that the family would be preparing traditional Indonesian food for us later. Wayan’s son showed us around the farm, walking us through its history and how Wayan first became dedicated to firefly conservation. In a small lab, two scientists explained the background of their work and let us see egg and larvae samples up close.
Afterward came the meal, which was simply fantastic. Our vegetarian requests were happily accommodated, and once again the family’s warmth shone through in a beautiful dinner we thoroughly enjoyed. When night fell, we watched the fireflies out on the fields.
Wayan is working to raise awareness of the declining population and to help bring their numbers back up, little by little.
Later, we got to meet Wayan in person. Wow — the energy, the joy for life, the courage and positivity this man and his family radiate in their fight to give fireflies a future.
If you want to meet a warm-hearted, courageous family, taste delicious local food, and drive home feeling deeply moved and inspired, bring all your friends and support Wayan and his family: save the fireflies!

Review Body: We wanted to get away from the busy streets of Ubud and were not disappointing. It was so different to what we expected in a good way. Wayan and his family and team were so welcoming from our arrival until the end, and understanding the importance the role that fireflies play in our ecosystem, learning about the conservation efforts and understanding how it could be implemented on a larger scale was inspiring and gave us hope for Bali's ecosystems future. Being show around the facilities including the field lab and seeing how lab technicians work and to then be able to witness the fireflies themselves in the dark of the night with the sound of the rainforest noctural life, was a magical experience and one which we will never forget. Standing there in the dark listening to the rainforest and watching the fireflies was so surreal, enchanting and peaceful. If we could, we would choose to fall asleep to those sounds and views everynight for the rest of our lives. At the end of the tour, we had dinner which was super delicious and participating in the cooking process and seeing the sustainable cooking methods taught us how little we really need in our day to day lives to be happy. 10/10 would recommend to anyone

Review Body: What an absolutely amazing experience and an absolute highlight of our near 3 week visit to Indonesia. Wayan and his family's passion for conservation and making a difference was so inspirational. From the minute we arrived the warmth and kindness we encountered was second to none.
We were given a tour of the lab and were given great insight in to the massive efforts the team are making to "bring back the light".
We were then able to participate in the creation of an amazing and delicious home cooked meal with locally grown produce (word of advice, don't eat beforehand you will be treated to a feast and will want to leave room for dessert!)
Following dinner we were taken to see the fireflies in their natural habitat (via the very sparkling "honeymoon suite" 🙂) None of our group had ever seen fireflies before and the experience was quite magical and something we'll always remember.
Thank you Wayan and family, you really are very special people and it was quite the privilege to spend time with you all and have you share a small taster of your world with us, we feel very blessed.
I will recommend to anyone coming to Bali to come visit you and I myself hope to return again.

Review Body: Prior to joining this tour, I've read some articles about their advocacy online but nothing beats hearing their story in person and getting a tour of their sanctuary. I got a deeper insight to their conservation efforts and enjoyed as well the farm-to-table dinner experience! All the food they prepared was so delicious.
Overall, it was such a meaningful experience and it gives me so much hope for ecotourism and conservation efforts in general.
I also appreciate how accommodating Wayan and his family were despite arriving late (so sorry about that!) and also helped in fixing transportation on the way back despite it being last minute. This experience was definitely one of the highlights of my Ubud trip and I recommend to anyone who wants to look for a unique and meaningful experience and support a good cause.
The location was quite far away from Ubud center but it was definitely worth it, especially if you're a nature lover! To anyone interested in joining, I'd recommend availing of the transfer service to avoid the hassle (I underestimated the traffic going there and was late) and especially since it ends late at night.

Review Body: This is a MUST visit if you’re in Bali, not only because of the groundbreaking research on fireflies but also because of the wholesome approach to conservation, tradition, research and community. We were very impressed by the team’s kindness and professionalism, knowledgeable Novi who explained and showed us so many things! Wayan who is thoughtful of every single detail of this experience and the entire team who works tirelessly for the environment and for the community. We learned so much about fireflies, how they breed them, what they discovered so far… about how they engage the local community with their studies and organic farming and went for a walk in the village to see what real village life looks like. We had an amazing dinner made with organic ingredients, the view was exceptional and we loved seeing fireflies in their natural habitat. Would visit again because there’s a lot more to learn and show friends, and we’re grateful to have met you all!
Terima kasih, Sofiya and Shiri

Review Body: I visited Wayan’s conservation farm north of Ubud with my mum and it was a special evening- such an interesting and magical place amongst the jungle. The hospitality by Wayan, all his family and staff was heart warming. We had a tour of the grounds and the lab and learnt all about fireflies, history, biology and nature. We were even able to name our own newly hatched firefly and release him into the wild watching him glow, which was so cool. We were treated to the most delicious banquet. I am vegetarian and still had so much choice- it was a 6 course feast full of fresh, home grown and home cooked delights of taste and health.
The only downside for me as an animal lover was seeing some of the animals on the farm like the goats, cows and pig caged and not able to roam freely.
However, I would wholeheartedly recommend anyone to visit the Bring Back the Light project if you are looking for an authentic and interesting experience close to nature and with exceptional hospitality and freshly cooked delicious Indonesian food. Thank you so much Wayan and family, keep up the great work!
