A heartfelt wildlife day with gibbons, forest trails and local stories
If you love wildlife, this is one of the most meaningful days you can do around Chiang Mai. You’ll head into the forests around Mae Kampong to look for rehabilitated gibbons living freely in the trees, alongside the local caretaker who has looked after them for years. Your visit also helps support their continued care.In Mae Kampong, wildlife conservation isn’t something brought in from the outside. It’s tied to the people who live here, know the forest, use its plants, and have spent years caring for the rehabilitated gibbons that now live freely in the trees. You’ll head into the forest with a local caretaker who knows the gibbons and their habitat intimately, learning how he looks after them while still giving them the space to stay wild. When we went, the gibbon we saw kept her distance high in the canopy — and that was exactly what made it feel so meaningful. The animals come first here. But the day is about more than gibbons. As you walk through the forest and village trails, you’ll hear how locals use native plants for food and traditional remedies, visit Mae Kampong itself, and see how village life and the surrounding forest are closely connected.Sightings are roughly 50/50, because nothing is staged. Even if you don’t see a gibbon, you come away with a much fuller picture of what local conservation looks like — people caring for wildlife, protecting the forest they depend on, and sharing that story with visitors in a way that directly supports the community. What to ExpectSee community-led conservationLook for rehabilitated gibbons living freely in the forestJoin the local caretaker who helps locate them in the treesHike around 2.5km through forest and village trailsLearn how local plants are used for food and traditional remediesExplore Mae Kampong village and visit a waterfallStop for coffee and enjoy a local lunch with a viewRound-trip transfers from Chiang Mai includedGood to KnowGibbon sightings aren't guaranteed.
