Camp on Pristine Beaches and Discover Life with the Moken Sea People
Step into the slower pace of life on Surin Islands with this 2-day, 1-night local-led trip. Instead of day-tripping in and out, you’ll sail across the Andaman Sea on a longtail boat navigated by a Moken captain and crew, who have called these waters home for generations.🐠 Beneath the surface, you’ll snorkel through reefs so alive they feel like another world—coral gardens bursting with color, parrotfish crunching at the edges, and curious clownfish darting into their anemone homes.🏕 By night, you’ll camp right on the beachfront, listening to the waves as you drift to sleep, waking to sunrise as your alarm and the stars as your ceiling.❤ But the true heartbeat of this journey is the Moken community. Walk through their stilted village, hear generations of survival stories carried by the sea, and join Moken women as they transform washed-up marine debris into striking beadwork. Each piece isn’t just jewelry—it’s a lifeline, sustaining the community while keeping traditions alive in their ancestral waters.By the end of this journey, you won’t just leave with memories—you’ll leave with a deeper understanding of a way of life in harmony with the sea, a renewed sense of wonder, and stories worth sharing for a lifetime. Perfect for conscious travelers seeking authentic, sustainable experiences that make a difference. What to ExpectYou'll be whisked around by your private longtail boat and led by expert local guides to the hidden snorkeling spots. Your captains and crew are the Moken Sea People themselves!Visit the Moken village, see their traditional stilt houses, and participate in a hands-on workshop—specifically bead crafting from upcycled ocean waste. This small, powerful action provides sustainable income for the Moken, supporting their traditions without forcing them to leave their homeStay for one night in a private beachfront tent (either Big Tent for 1-3 people or Medium Tent for 1-2 people) with your group. We’ve even included camping fans and lamps to make your wild night feel comfortably cool.Alongside the Moken crew, you’ll have an English-speaking guide who is also experienced in photography and videography. They will look after you throughout the trip, making sure you’re comfortable and supported, while documenting your experience so you can focus on enjoying the journey.Shared roundtrip transport from Khao Lak hotels and shared roundtrip speedboat transfers between the pier and the Surin Islands are includedGood to KnowFood is not included – bring cash (150–300 THB per meal) to buy meal coupons at the national park cafeteria.Electricity is available nightly from 6:00 PM–7:00 AM; bring a power bank (20,000mAh recommended)Charging stations are in the cafeteria – bring an extension cord if charging multiple devicesNo plastic bags, alcohol, or loud noise after 9:30 PM (national park rules)Activities may vary depending on weather and sea conditions – the team will adjust to keep things safe and enjoyableAll snorkelling equipment provided – please treat it with care and follow safety instructionsPlease note that transfers from Khao Lak to the Surin Islands are shared with other guests who are not part of your trip. Meet your host
Isawan and Tommy are a couple with a deep love for the sea and a strong commitment to the Moken community. After volunteering in the wake of the 2004 tsunami, Tommy stayed in Khao Lak, learning the Andaman islands like the back of his hand. Years later, Isawan joined him, bringing her creative skills as a designer. Together, they work closely with Moken families to craft handmade goods, run thoughtful workshops, and transform marine debris into useful items. They also organize snorkeling and freediving trips, hiring Moken people as captains and crew, which provides income while sharing the islands’ beauty and local knowledge. What started with just two households now involves much of the village, all while keeping traditions alive and giving travelers a deeper, more authentic island experience.
