4D3N Maliau Basin Trek – Into Sabah’s Lost World
This 4D3N expedition takes you deep into Maliau Basin — one of the most remote and least disturbed rainforests in Southeast Asia. Often called Sabah’s “Lost World,” it remained unknown to the outside world until the mid-20th century, and even today only a small number of trekkers enter each year. This is not a polished nature walk. You’ll trek through dense primary rainforest, cross rivers, navigate steep and muddy trails, and sleep in simple jungle camps far from roads or towns. The reward? Waterfalls like Ginseng Falls and the powerful 7-tiered Maliau Falls, towering forest canopy, and the rare feeling of being properly off the grid.Your first evening begins with a night drive from base camp — a chance to spot nocturnal wildlife such as civets, owls and leopard cats. The following days take you deeper into the basin, where long jungle days are broken up by river swims and waterfall dips. This trip is for travellers who don’t mind basic accommodation, mud on their boots and leeches on the trail. It’s not glamorous — but it’s real. And very few people can say they’ve experienced a rainforest this untouched. What to Expect4D3N jungle trek through Maliau Basin, Borneo’s “Lost World”Night drive to spot nocturnal wildlife on Day 1Hikes to stunning Ginseng Falls and the iconic Maliau FallsLed by an experienced nature guide with all transport and meals providedSpend your nights at the Maliau Basin Study Centre and jungle campsGood to KnowThis trek is moderate to challenging – expect plenty of mud, steep trails, and rope-assisted sectionsLeech socks are provided – and highly recommendedPorters are not included, but you can hire one if neededAccommodation is shared dorm-style at the Maliau Basin Study Centre and rustic jungle huts at the campsIncludes all conservation and trekking feesStarts and ends in Kota Kinabalu, with about 5–6 hours’ drive each wayBest suited for reasonably fit hikers who love remote nature and don’t mind roughing itFacilitiesShared dorm room at Maliau Basin Study CentreFan-cooled roomShared bathroomTowels and hairdryer provided
