Kiulu trek with local village life and gentle river rafting.
This is a real peek into village life in the untamed heart of Sabah. On this guided walk along jungle paths and riverside trails in Kiulu, you'll follow the same routes once used by villagers to reach town before roads existed. It’s peaceful, scenic, and full of little insights into traditional life that most travellers completely miss.Unlike other treks that simply show off the sights, this one brings you into the rhythm of local life. You’ll stop by a village to learn rubber tapping, explore jungle plants used for food and medicine, and meet locals along the way. This is especially great for curious travellers who are looking to connect meaningfully with local culture.Refuel with a hearty home-cooked lunch after your trek. And just when you think the day can’t get better, you’ll hop into a raft and float (or splash!) your way down the crystal-clear Kiulu River. It’s a gentle white-water rafting experience, so fun but not too challenging — a great way to wrap up a day of exploring. What to ExpectGuided jungle trek through local villages (~5km trek)Get hands-on with rubber tappingLearn to identify wild herbs used for food and medicineWhite-water rafting on the Kiulu River (8km journey, gentle, suitable for beginners)Delicious home-cooked lunchPick-up and drop-off from Kota Kinabalu includedGood to KnowThis experience is join-in, so you’ll be part of a small groupNo rafting experience needed — the rapids are mild and beginner-friendlyA reasonable level of fitness is helpful, but the trek is manageable for beginners

Meet your host
Mejin and June started Outreach Borneo back in 2018 with a simple idea—connecting travellers to the real Sabah through the eyes of its local communities. Based in Kiulu, they’ve built something truly special: a travel experience that feels more like being welcomed into someone’s home than joining a tour. Whether it's learning to cook over a bamboo fire, exploring jungle trails, or staying in village homestays, everything is thoughtfully done with the local people at heart. They work closely with families, guides, and farmers to make sure tourism brings real benefits to the area. What stands out most is how they’ve grown without losing sight of what matters—sharing culture, protecting nature, and making sure everyone involved gains something meaningful.
